Check Your Sunscreen...Is It Safe or Toxic?

Who do you believe when it comes to sunscreen? What's the difference between Professional Sunscreen or over the counter? Some thoughts before you take that next trip to the beach.

Did you know that there are no FDA regulations for the makers of sunscreen?  You just can’t believe what you read on the bottle as far as protection strength because makers are able to make false claims on their packaging.  Consumers know that the effects of the sun can be damaging, but what they don’t know is that some of the chemicals used in the sunscreen can be harmful as well.

One of our favorites is the Dermalogica Daylight Defense line at our Salon and Spa.  It gives the consumer a choice of two sunscreen technologies: chemical based and physical based.  The chemical based formulations protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays by absorbing them, while physical formulations reflect the damaging rays.  These products also contain antioxidant vitamins that help defend the skin from aging and free radicals.

Protecting and maintaining healthy skin is our priority, and we feel good knowing that these products are manufactured by a reputable skin care manufacturer. Some tips you might need when purchasing your next bottle of lotion might be to choose a professional skin care product before anything on the supermarket shelf.

Cheaper may not be a good idea if you are worried about the health of your skin. Waterproof and sweat-proof formulas need to be reapplied often to remain effective.  If the chemicals are an issue, a physical sunscreen might be the way to go!

What do you use that works for you?  We would love to hear what you think about sunscreen because we are all putting it on, but do we know what’s in it?
