Come to a Wiffle Ball Tournament Fundraiser in Colonia

A fundraiser for a local Colonia family will take place Saturday, July 30 starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Lamont Swain Park located behind Pennsylvania Avenue Elementary School Number 27 in Colonia.

The event, a wiffle ball tournament and barbeque is sponsored by the Colonia & Woodbridge Corner Newspaper. Registration will start at 11:00 a.m. followed by the tournament at noon. Proceeds from the tournament and barbeque will benefit Joseph McQuade, an elementary school student whose family lives in Colonia. McQuade is suffering from a brain tumor.

Each wiffle ball team will be made up of five to seven players. The cost is $50 per player for up to five participants and $10 for up to two more team members.

There will also be a junior wiffle ball team playing in the tournament at a cost of $25 each for the first five players and $5 for each additional team member.

Registration for the tournaments may be limited or closed. For more information, call Debbie Meehan at 732-382-0273.

The barbeque is $10 for adults and $5 for children under age 14. There is no charge for children under five. Hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks will be served at the barbeque.

Lamont Swain Park is named after Lamont Swain, an Irvington police officer who died in an automobile accident at the age of 30. He was the first African American to serve as a volunteer firefighter in Colonia.
