Rutgers Honor Society Puts Engineering Lesson in Woodbridge Students' Hands

Students at Fords Middle School, Woodbridge Middle School and Iselin Middle School will compete in January in the New Jersey Future City Contest.

Students at Fords Middle School recently got a hands-on lesson in science, brought to them by Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society at Rutgers University.

20 students from Fords Middle School were given a lesson in force and friction in the movement of liquid, coordinated by the honor society, in preparation for their first year of competition in the New Jersey Future City Contest, according to science teacher Richard Dosch.

The team building event was meant to stimulate interest and creativity in engineering, Dosch said.

“Many of these sixth and seventh grade students are being introduced to the field of engineering for the first time, so in an effort to inspire their creativity and understanding of the field Tau Beta Pi opened helped coordinate this amazing hands-on experience," he said.

In the past, Tau Beta Pi has worked with students at Woodbridge Middle School through its "MindSET program," which is a partnership with local schools to stir interest in math and science, according to Dosch.

Fords Middle School will compete in the January science competition for the first time. It will be Woodbridge Middle School's fourth year of participation, Dosch said.

"Both schools have been inspired by Iselin Middle School’s long-term success in the competition under the leadership of Lisa Lubarsky and the other Iselin staff," he said.
