Question of the Day: Should Rutgers Change the Alma Mater?

Tell us what you think about the change to the Rutgers Alma Mater.

Rutgers University's 140-year-old Alma Mater is about to change.

According to an article on NJ.com, the university has announced that the first line of the college song is being changed to make it more gender-neutral.

"On the Banks of the Old Raritan" begins with the line "My father sent me to old Rutgers/And resolv'd that I should be a man."

But now, a new opening line will start the song: "From far and near we came to Rutgers/And resolved to learn all that we can."

According to the article, a few words have been changed over the years, but discussions about changing the song have been controversial.

What do you think? Is it time for a change for "On the Banks of the Old Raritan," or should the song be preserved?Β

If you want to hear it before you decide, you'll have a chance on Saturday: The song will debut during the 3:30 p.m. Blackout Game against Arkansas.
