Enjoy the View! A Preview of the Woodbridge 'Skyline' Mini-Golf Course

The new mini golf course at the Woodbridge Community Center opens Monday. Here's a preview - with the New York skyline for which it is named.

Circle April 9 on your calendar. That's when Woodbridge's new 18-hole miniature golf course - Skyline Mini-Golf, named after a view of the New York skyline - opens next to the .

Mayor John McCormac said in a letter to township residents that the mini-golf course was just the beginning: "In coming months, we anticipate even more recreation activities with the addition of professional baseball/softball batting cages, a trampoline center, family picnic area, and companion recreational and entertainment amenities."

"Imagine a senior resident golf league teeing-off on a weekday morning, corporations booking the facility for seminars and training, followed by relaxing recreation and great food at the Arenas Cafe," McCormac said in a statement.

Tom Maras April 06, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Nice skyline view, but golf requires one to keep their head down while playing. That is something Mac and company should be doing in "shame" for spending that money on a game in these difficult economic times. How many roads could be improves, other community services funded or improved with that money, etc. But, hey, after spending about $7 Million or so to get the rights for County residents to play golf at $85/round, with an annual $650.00/yr membership, this is the least he could do for those who cannot afford the real thing. P.S. I wonder if they put up signs warning the public about the gases (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landfill_gas) methane gas, that vent from that capped landfill!
soo sad April 06, 2012 at 06:23 PM
Well Tom with the price of gas having something close to home is nice for the kids. P.S. Are you ever happy about anything that is done in this town? God if you think your views are so correct run for office if Woodbridge is to pro democrat run for county, state or federal office. Make the change you think we need be about it don't talk about it....
soo sad April 06, 2012 at 06:27 PM
If you think the methane gas isn't safe call the EPA! Sometimes it just looks like your just saying stuff to buck the system go after the real issues and stay on point.
Tom Maras April 07, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Soo sad, sincerely, thank you for your commentary. If it seems I was off-point and superfluous with my post script on the landfill gases (methane in particular), please note I wrote about and also spoke about that concern at a town council meeting months ago. At the town council meeting I cited a NJ DEP inspection report that cited broken, missing and clogged gas vents at the capped landfill/ community center. Do you believe it is better to close the barn door, after the horses have gotten out? This is a safety issue that should be of concern. There is a old saying that goes: There is a time and place for everything. Was this the time and place for this expenditure? And if it is going to be the great money maker it is being touted to be, why didn't a 'private' concern build it and run it? As to your comments about politics, "Party" affiliations at the township level are relatively unimportant because, at that level, it is much more about crony-ism and nepotism than it is about political ideologies. That said, I applaud anyone who works to ensure elected officials remain accountable to their constituents. Enjoy the Easter/Passover weekend.

@soo sad: if the mayor walked on water, Maras would say it was because the tide was low. Anything good that happens in this town, Maras finds a way to turn to the negative. All he does is complain about how much it costs, and how taxesa re high. Funny thing is, he doesn't even pay taxes, he is not a homeowner. And he has run for office in the past, he lost by an embarrassing amount. He also complains about the skate parkin Colonia. Every time I drive past the skateparks, they are full of happy kids having fun. Guess Mr. Maras doesn't want anyone to be happy. He wants everyone to be grumpy like him.
Lisa April 08, 2012 at 04:00 PM
I'm getting really tired of Tom's constant negativity. As a parent, I have no problem with the miniature golf course. What is wrong with something fun that the family can do together and not pay an arm and a leg for.
Tom Maras April 08, 2012 at 04:04 PM
Sly, you are hilarious. If you are not the “Great One” himself (and I don’t mean Jackie Gleason) , you must be a “kissing cousin”! Such devotion and adulation for the man who, to many, is a narcissistic, self-aggrandizing, bully, who is re-living his childhood through his voting getting give-a-ways, on everyone else money. You’re right, well, ½ right, if Mac walked on water I would question how much that stunt cost, which town council “Resolution” approved it and what bond the costs are buried in. As to everyone in the township being happy, let Mac try reducing their tax bills. See how many happy faces will go, rightfully so, with that Big Mac deal. And if Mac really cares so much for the children in this community, why is he “bonding” them and their parents into too so much debt? Let see how smiley those happy face are when they have to paying off those bond debts as adults. There are many good things in this township and I applaud all and enjoy the ones I can. But Mac didn’t “give” them to us. The people of this township paid for them! As to the rest of your commentary, well…

Tom keep up the good work. Someone needs to point out the obvious corruption!!!
Tom Maras April 08, 2012 at 06:35 PM
Okay, a new bird has arrived. Not doubt being an "empty nester" has significant psychological meaning in the choice of a screen name. Hope you are copping well with the transition. So, you are tired of me talking about Mac and company spending everyone else money. Too bad! Did you pay for your offsprings wants and needs, or did others? Let's assume you did. Now tell us why you think a politician has the right to take from others to feather his nest.
Lisa April 08, 2012 at 06:58 PM
There you go, being the obnoxious little creep that you are. You don't have any idea what the screen name refers to, so don't make baseless assumptions. I happen to have 2 children, both under 10, in the Woodbridge school system, and I take care of 100% of their needs. And, no, I don't have a problem with the mini golf course. I don't give a crap about the politics in this town. I do, however, care about my children and something fun to do as a family is not the end of the world to me.
Bill Roberts April 08, 2012 at 07:24 PM
Not on my dime, Nester! If a private buisness wants to open up a mini golf and knows upfront that it takes 50 people per hour attending for each and every hour operation; and that number becomes compounded by every bad weather day, AND they still want to go ahead with the project, then that is a risk that they take with THEIR investment capital.
Tom Maras April 08, 2012 at 07:46 PM
If the Nester wants to raise her chicks in a socialist nest, perhaps she should move them to Greece, Portugal or some other socialist society. Those counties have lots of give me's and just lok at how well those countries are doing!
Tamara Winfrey April 08, 2012 at 08:09 PM
They would have been better off building a cemetery. At least that would have looked better and had some long-term value.
Tom Maras April 08, 2012 at 08:23 PM
The way Mac and company are killing everyone with traces and long term debt, I fully agree. Just remember what he did for the police and fighters pensions, before Jon Corrine dumped him.
Tom Maras April 08, 2012 at 08:25 PM
Sorry, that was supposed to read TAXES, not traces.
slyfox1961 April 09, 2012 at 02:16 AM
I believe I will let Mr. Maras' statements speak for themselves. It is painfully apparant what his agenda is. He has now succeeded in turning this forum into his personnel crusade against the mayor. Again, he offers no ideas or plans of any kind, just rants against anything McCormac.
Deborah Bell (Editor) April 09, 2012 at 05:31 AM
" Funny thing is, he doesn't even pay taxes, he is not a homeowner. " Sly, so you think all those people in apartments and condos that are rented don't pay taxes? Do the owners of the apartments and condos pay taxes, and isn't part of that cost built into the rent? It's a little unfair to dump on people who don't live in a house, don't you think?
Deborah Bell (Editor) April 09, 2012 at 05:37 AM
I'm so glad everyone is getting along so well together, and giving others the right to speak their mind just as they want for themselves, so I don't have to come out and say stuff like, "be courteous or I'm closing off all these comments!" Thank you, all, for your consideration. :)
Tom Maras April 09, 2012 at 01:08 PM
It appears slyfox had an epiphany on Easter Sunday about my “agenda”. If so, it is better late than never. My statements have always stood on their own, with my name attached to them. After the unfortunate demise of the Home News Tribune forum, that being, Woodbridge in NJ, there is only one news based media serving Woodbridge Township that provides factual, open minded coverage of matters concerning the township. As a part of its coverage, it also provides its readers an opportunity to express and exchange view points on the topic on a real-time basis. If you are reading this, you are on it. Many are now following and posting on this forum because they know its integrity is second to none. They also know their posts are not subject to arbitrary and capricious deletion by other readers. This is a free and open forum and it will never be anyone’s “personal forum” for an agenda. As to Mr. McCormac and his team, so long as they continue to spend, tax and bond for things that sever their wants and not the real needs of this community, especially in these times, my alleged “crusade”, which frankly is to stop the pork barrel spending, will continue. How’s that for an novel idea and plan?
Can't shut me up April 09, 2012 at 06:03 PM
Let's look at this realistically...If the McCormac administration wasn't so damn corrupt, then Tom Maras wouldn't have any reason to post. Tom keep up the good work. Maybe the blind Woodbridge sheep will one day wake up and see Mac for what he truly is. Till then keep up the good work Tom. KEEP POSTING TOM!!!!!
slyfox1961 April 09, 2012 at 07:05 PM
"smartzonemary" is just another one of the many aliases that Maras uses. He posts, and then comments on his own posts under a different screen name. A tactic that he perfected on the "other" forum.
Can't shut me up April 09, 2012 at 08:35 PM
OK, UN-slyfox1961....Anyone tell you that you're delusional? Hey Tom are you laughing at this comment. I know I am. PS....Funny how Mac is born in 1961. LOL
Deborah Bell (Editor) April 09, 2012 at 08:39 PM
Let's respect one another, folks.

Woodbridge Township Resident April 14, 2012 at 01:00 AM
Are you truly serious? Do you consider yourself to be an intelligent individual and make a ridiculous statement like that? I can't remember the last time I saw families playing in a cemetery enjoying their selves. I logged on to this web-site thinking that I would find some useful information about our town and instead found nothing but negative remarks on progress and development in a growing community. After receiving a discount coupon in my sewer bill, I had the opportunity to bring my children to play mini golf this week while they were off from school and found a wonderful and enjoyable place to spend the afternoon with my family. For those of you like myself that are looking for some useful information regarding our town, pay no attention to these naysayers, sounds to me like somebody wasn't aloud to play in the sand box. Woodbridge Township Resident
Tom Maras April 14, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Near Woodbridge Resident, Perhaps. Ms. Winfrey’s comment about the cemetery was meant to be a metaphor about how this mayor and his administration are burying the residents of this community and their children in debt. But that is something she can comment on, should she choose to do so. Few would argue that seeing children, seniors or adults enjoying a wholesome game, is not a pleasant sight. It is. One might conclude from your commentary that you also disagree with Mr. Roberts’ commentary about who should be the owner, builder and operator of this playground. But that commentary, along with the site chosen for the course, are the issue. It would be interesting to know your beliefs about what government should provide for the health and safety of the public, verses the wants of a few. And in case you did not know it, the genesis for the miniature golf course came from a comment a child made about playing miniature golf to Mr. McCormac about three years ago. So, if you want a bigger sandbox, a go-cart tract, batting cages, trampolines, or the like, have a child suggest it to the mayor. No doubt he will float another bond or divert funds from something else to accommodate the want! BOTTOM line, Woodbridge needs “ratable’s” (private businesses)to bring in money to lower or contain taxes, not government spending tax dollars on self-serving frills, especially in this economy!
