Woodbridge Man Sentenced To Prison For Killing Man With Car

A Woodbridge man has been sentenced to serve five years in state prison for driving while intoxicated and killing another man, Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced Tuesday.

The man, Edward Domenicucci, 62, was sitting in front of his motel room when he was struck by the defendant’s car in 2013.

Allen Szyrwiel, 63, of the Port Reading section of Woodbridge was sentenced to the term on April 25, 2014 by Superior Court Judge Dennis Nieves in New Brunswick.

The judge ordered the defendant to serve 85 percent of the penalty before he can be eligible for parole.

Under an agreement reached with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Christine D’Elia, the defendant pleaded guilty on Feb. 20 to a count of vehicular homicide, admitting he was intoxicated when he drove his Grand Marquis and struck Domenicucci on May 22, 2013.

Szyrwiel was charged after blood-alcohol testing showed a reading of 0.092 percent. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

Domenicucci was sitting outside, in front of his room at City Motel on Route 1 in Woodbridge, when he was killed. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after he was struck at 3:54 p.m.

Szyrwiel was pulling into a parking space at the motel’s parking lot and stepped on the accelerator, rather than the brake, and struck the victim.
