A Brazilian man charged in connection with a high-speed chase on the New Jersey Turnpike is an undocumented immigrant, according to New Jersey State Police.

Demilson Moura Dos Anjos, 35, was taken into custody following a high-speed chase that began in Woodbridge and ended on Durant Street on the Newark-Elizabeth border at 9:42 a.m. Friday, police said.

Dos Anjos was charged with eluding, possession of CDS (marijuana) under 50 grams and immigration violations, police said. He is currently in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a department of Homeland Security, police said.

Dos Anjos was driving his girlfriend's car northbound on the New Jersey Turnpike in Woodbridge when officers observed him speeding and began pursuit at 9:20 a.m., police said. The exact rate of speed was unavailable.

Two State Police vehicles from Cranbury were involved in the chase.

After the cars exited the Turnpike, Dos Anjos stopped his car and attempted to escape, but was apprehended a short distance away, police said.

His girlfriend wasn't inside the vehicle, according to police. Her status as a citizen was unknown to State Police spokesman Steve Jones.
