Crime Down in Woodbridge, Decreases Noted in Burglary and Theft

The Uniform Crime Report contains town-specific data regarding major and violent crimes.

Overall crime numbers in Woodbridge township decreased between January 2012 and January 2013, with the larges drops in assault, burglaries and theft.

According to data contained in the 2012 Uniform Crime Report, 2,558 crimes were reported in 2012 versus 2,417 in 2013, a 5.5 percent decrease from year to year.

The Uniform Crime Report, compiled by the Department of Law and Public Safety, tracks reported crimes in seven categories, including murder, rape, robbery, assault, larceny, burglary and motor vehicle theft. It also counts the number of reported bias crimes, carjackings and domestic violence incidents. 

In Woodbridge, robberies involving firearms increased from 12 reported incidents in 2012 to 23 in 2013, contributing to the 10.9 percent increase in total robberies between the two years.

Burglaries decreased noticeably, with 338 reported burglaries in 2012 versus 268 in 2013, a 20.7 percent decrease.

Motor vehicle theft also decreased, but only in the category of autos, as opposed to buses and trucks, and "other" vehicles.

Auto theft decreased 9.9 percent, with 73 incidents reported in 2013, as opposed to 81 in 2012, according to the data.
