A 4-year-old girl remains hospitalized after being mauled by two pit bulls at a home in New Brunswick, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced Friday.
The child, whose identity is being withheld, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where she is being treated for injuries suffered in the attack, police said.
Police were dispatched to the home on Lufberry Avenue in New Brunswick at 7:59 p.m. Three officers fired an undisclosed number of shots and killed the dogs. Neither the child nor a babysitter who was in the room at the time was injured by the gunfire, police said.
Police rushed the girl to the hospital. She is listed in critical condition.
New Brunswick police contacted the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, which took control of the investigation.
No charges have been filed. The investigation is active and is continuing, police said.
