Colonia Couple Gets Jail for Rental Scam

Christine Winters and Michael Daddario of Colonia have been sentenced to 10 years in prison for running a rental scam that stole $40,000 from potential renters.

A Colonia couple who authorities say ran a rental scam that stole more than $40,000 from more than 40 people, including people seeking shelter following Hurricane Sandy, were sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday.

Christine Winters, 46 and Michael Daddario, 41, were each sentenced on Tuesday to 10 years in jail by Superior Court Judge Dennis Nieves in New Brunswick.

The pleaded guilty in August to several counts of theft by deception, according to an article on NJ.com

Winters and Daddario operated a rental scam through Craigslist that would offer attractive rental properties at low prices and take deposits from prospective renters who would never be able to move in, according to a December 2012 article on Patch.

Nieves also sentenced the couple to make restitution to the victims in the amount of more than $50,000, according to the report.

The couple was arrested in July 2012 for the first time, released and continued to advertise the scam, before being arrested again in December 2012. Daddario was arrested a third time in relation to the scam after his February 2013 release, according to the report.
