Register Now For Children's Summer Art Workshops

Arts Guild New Jersey (formerly the Arts Guild of Rahway) is offering fun and affordable art workshops for both kids and teens this summer.  Registration is now open for the workshops, which will be held during the last two weeks of July and first two weeks of August. The Arts Guild’s classes are among the most affordable in New Jersey, with a quality on par with classes offered at area museums and large art centers.

There are three easy ways to register for the workshops: Visit www.agnj.org (Art Classes page) to register/pay with a credit card; print and mail the registration form (available at www.agnj.org or by calling 732-381-7511) with your check payment; visit Arts Guild New Jersey’s office at 1670 Irving Street, Rahway, during office hours, Monday- Thursday, 10:00 AM –4:00 PM (Please use parking lot entrance).

Workshops for kids (ages 7-11), are offered in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Cartooning, and Art Story.  Each class is held for 90 minutes daily, Monday-Friday, for one week.  Tuition for each five-day class is $60. Class times are staggered, so enrollment in more than one class is possible.  Children may take classes during multiple sessions to work on varied projects.  Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture are offered each week, July 16-20, July 23-27, July 30-August 3, and August 6-10. Cartooning is offered for two weeks, July 16-20 and July 23-27. Art Story is also offered for two weeks, July 30-August 3 and August 6-10.

In Drawing, kids will learn to draw with various materials such as pencil, charcoal, pastel, and ink.  They will have the opportunity to create finished drawings of a range of subjects, including still life, nature, and photographs. In Painting, children will create original pictures from observation and photos, learn several techniques used by master artists and get an introduction on the use of color as they create unique new original work. Sculpture encourages children to think three-dimensionally by learning about design and composition of forms in space; this is a great class for kids who enjoy constructing objects out of materials like wood, cardboard, and wire, or modeling 3-D art using air-dry clay to create free-standing or wall hanging sculpture. Learn the basics of creating comic-style characters and scenes like professional cartoonists in Cartooning class. Telling a simple story in pictures and creating their own comic panel or comic strip page will be projects in these classes. Create an Art Story is a brand-new class that will give students the skills to tell a story, fairy tale or favorite movie plot using a variety of art-making techniques. Each day is a different activity: Students recreate the characters, scenery and setting, and objects in the story using materials such as paint, markers, colored pencils and paper maché. During the final class, each student has the opportunity to present their ‘art story’ to their classmates. Materials are included for all classes.

Workshops for teens (ages 12-16), are offered in Portfolio Development, Japanese Anime/Manga-style Cartooning, Acrylic Painting, and Sculpture. Each class is held for 2 hours daily, Monday-Friday, for one week. Tuition for each five-day class is $75. Class times are staggered, so enrollment in multiple classes is possible.  Portfolio Development  is offered for one week only, July 16-20.  The Manga, Painting, and Sculpture teen workshops are each offered during the weeks of July 23-27 and July 30-August 3.

Portfolio Development is a new offering designed for students developing portfolios for college/art school applications. College application requirements will be reviewed. One or two projects will be assigned (to be started in class and completed at home), and constructive criticism of finished drawings will be discussed. Japanese Anime/Manga is a much-loved style of cartooning found in comic books, animated cartoons and films. This workshop is an extension of the Arts Guild’s popular Manga class for teens, which is offered for eight weeks, in fall, winter and spring sessions.  Acrylic Painting is a class for teens with an interest in exploring color, texture, form/line work, and subject matter to create original still-life, landscape, or fantasy paintings.  In Sculpture, students will build 3-D artworks, such as statues and abstract forms, out of a variety of found objects and other materials, while looking at and discussing sculptures by numerous artists.  Materials are included for all classes.

All summer classes for children and teens are held in comfortable, air-conditioned classrooms.  Workshops are taught by knowledgeable, experienced instructors who work within public school districts or for universities/colleges and other non-profit art centers. Classes are designed to be professional, yet sized to ensure that your child will receive the individual attention they need to excel.
