Carteret Honors the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 with a Pair of Memorial Services

Sept, 11 services include one for first responders, and one remembering three borough residents who were killed in the terror attacks.

Carteret will celebrate the lives of three borough residents who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as the first responders who rushed to the scene, with a pair of memorial services on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

The first program will honor the heroes of 9/11, said Carteret Fire Chief Brian O'Connor.

"We do it for the emergency responders - police, fire, and EMS - in the area," said O'Connor.  "We invite them to come up."

The service begins at 9:45 on Sunday, Sept. 11 and lasts about an hour. It will be followed by light refreshments, an explanation of Alarm Bell 5-5-5, musical selections by the police and fire pipe and drums, a laying of the wreath, and a short program.

The program will be held at Carteret Fire Headquarters on Roosevelt Ave., which recently unveiled a monument on the grounds, constructed in part from a steel beam pulled from one of the Twin Towers.

Later the same evening, the Borough of Carteret will host a ten-year-anniversary memorial service at the 9/11 memorial in Carteret Park at 7 pm.  The memorial service, which will also run about an hour, will honor those who died in the attacks on New York, Washington, and Pennyslvania.  Three Carteret residents - Jayceryll DeChavez, Joseph Mangano, and Colleen Meehan Barkow - died in the attacks on the World Trade Center and will be remembered at the service.

The Carteret 9/11 memorial is located on the ground of Carteret Park and features a beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center and plaques remembering the three Carteret natives who died in the attacks.
