Westboro Baptist Church to Picket at Cpl. Reinhard Funeral
Group plans on having a protesting presence at the Clark funeral of the young Marine killed last week in Afghanistan.
The Westboro Baptist Church protesters plan to be outside St. Agnes Church in Clark Monday, holding up signs at the funeral of Marine Cpl. Kevin Reinhard. The signs declare his death in Afghanistan as a sign of God's judgment on America.
In Sam Phelps-Roper's view, he and his fellow parishioners at Westboro are doing God's work.
The deaths of soldiers oversees, they believe, is because various states in the country have legalized homosexual marriage, he said.
Homosexuals, Phelps-Roper said, "are the lowest rung on the ladder of depravity. You set it up on a pedestal and call it holy. [Americans] fornicate with everything that moves, God hates those things. This nation is awash in idolatry in all its forms."
It doesn't seem readily apparent what that has to do with the death of Cpl. Reinhard. The 25-year-old Marine, a Colonia resident, was killed along with five other soldiers in a January 19 helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
In Phelps-Roper's opinion, soldiers are dying because God wants it that way.
"This foolish nation thinks they can do a thing that is called an abomination. We can focus on chasing Arabs in caves, God sits in heaven and laughs, and sends children home in body bags," he said.
Phelps-Roper is the grandson of Westboro founder Fred Phelps. The church, which has been labeled as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League, has approximately 80 members and is based in Kansas.
They fly all over the country, Phelps-Roper said, to protest at the funerals of soldiers killed in war.
But not all soldiers, according to Phelps-Roper.
"We get to as many as we can where there is a public spectacle. If it's a private funeral and they aren't having a public service, insisting that God is blessing America when clearly he is not, we don't go," he said.
On the township website, Woodbridge residents who wish to honor Cpl. Reinhard are urged to "line both sides of Inman Avenue" after the funeral mass at St. Agnes Church in Clark. Cpl. Reinhard will be buried at St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Colonia.
But the township's gesture isn't what caught the Westboro Baptist Church's attention.
Phelps-Roper said the church is responding to information found at the Patriot Guard forum, a motorcycle club that attend funerals of soliders, firefighters, and police, but only after being invited by family members.
The Patriot Guard began in 2005, to provide a response to the activities of the Westboro group. They block the group from having to be seen by mourners at funerals, and they rev their motorcycles to drown out the Westboro protests.
Whatever fallen hero the Patriot Guard wishes to honor is where the Westboro clan will be, Phelps-Roper said.
"We've been to hundreds of [funerals]. We aren't trying to get into anyone's face. We protest thousands of feet if not miles away. We leave when the funeral starts. We don't invade the funerals or cemeteries," he said, pointing out that his church's members consider themselves to be law-abiding citizens.
There was no mention of how far away the Westboro protesters will be placed from the church, which is the only place Phelps-Roper plans on picketing.
The Patriot Guard may easily overwhelm the Westboro group, though. Phelps-Roper said that only "three to five" protesters from the church will show up to protest in Clark.
Clark Mayor Sal Bonaccorso said he spoke with Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac and both municipalities are coordinating their police efforts.
"We will have the police at St. Agnes. The protesters will be 500 ft. away from the church. They won't even be visible," Bonaccorso said. "Three to five of them won't be a problem."
McCormac could not be reached for comment.
"They have a right to express their speech, whether we agree with it or not. We will follow all the rules," Bonaccorso said. "But this is a hero who gave his life for his country. I don't need them upsetting anybody."
Information about the wake and funeral of Cpl. Kevin Reinhard can be found in his obituary.

This is a well-balanced article on a very hot-button topic. I don't think I could have been as impartial.

Ms. Bell has written an informative and well balanced article. Too bad Woodbridge doesn't have more writers and news outlets of this caliber.
God will ensure this fallen Marine is buried with all the love and honors his grateful community can bestow upon him.
God bless Cpl. Reinhard and his family.

Never in my life have I ever met such a professional and compassionate reporter as Ms. Bell. Unlike the slugs at the News Tribune. Westboro "Church" are evil vile MONSTERS.
Rest in Peace Cpl Reinhard.

Crowds will gather to anti-protest. A funeral is neither the time nor place for a protest. These people have no respect and are ungrateful for those who lost their lives. God's will? Sounds like a bunch of brain washed followers being led by a delusional, disrespectful, and disgusting devil-like individual.

The best thing that can be done is as many patriots should be at St Agnes Church and, in a non confrontational way, get between these moonbats and the family, sparing the family any more pain than they already have to endure.
May God Bless the sacrifice of CPL Kevin James Reinhard and his family.
Semper Fi, Marine! Rest in honored peace.

Patriot Guard Riders is NOT a club. We are a group of people, riders and nonriders alike, who have an overwhelming sense of doing the right thing when called upon to do so.
Those people have always threatened to show up and have only done so once, never getting out of their van. Each time you write about them, it gives them free publicity and their site stats go way up.

On the contrary-- I think this article had the best quote from the Phelps bunch I have read that demonstrates their absolute moonbattery. Besides, if we don't know where they are, how can I point them out to my nephews as examples of how NOT to behave?

Dear Ms. Reeves,
Unlikely the fundamentals and very misguided rational that drives the Westboro Baptist clan, the efforts and purpose of the Patriot Guard Riders are praise worthy. Ironically, both groups are able to do what they do because of the service and sacrifices of our veterans and active military personnel. Were it not for their service to this great nation, none of us would be able to enjoy the freedoms our constitution provides. Clearly, the Westboro clan are a fringe group that deserves contempt. But wishing they would go away or saying the press should ignore them will not make it so.
The public has a right to know about this group and those like them. It is a free press that ensures the public is aware of them and their activities. Knowledge is power, let us use it wisely to thwart the purposes of such organizations.

To thwart their purposes, they need to not be mentioned. Every time an article covers them, people go to their site which drives up their statistics and gives them more "power" in the way of free publicity. They make "threats" to show but do not have the monetary or personnel means to do so. PGR is an invited honor guard and escort for the fallen. We began our history to shield grieving families from disturbances, but have grown to be much more and do not consider this group a viable threat in this and most other east coast states. Yes, saying the press should ignore them is exactly what will make them go away. Paying attention to a tantrum is a sure-fire way to have more thrown at you.

Dear Louise,
If only Ignoring these fringe groups would make them go away. Unfortunately, it won’t. Like your organization, which is truly praiseworthy, these loons, who are despicable to most, are protected by the US Constitution. Accordingly, they have a right to spew their hateful diatribes.
Personally, I’m glad that we enjoy a free press in this country. A press that informs us of such groups and their intentions. It is through such information that decent people can take steps to thwart the plans of the WBC and others like them. That same free press also informed us about the good things the Patriot Riders, and organizations like it, do to honor our fallen warriors.
To the best of my knowledge, the WBC never made an appearance at Cpl. Reinhard’s church service or his funeral procession to the cemetery. So what did their few moments of publicity gain them? How about no revenue from lawsuits and a lot more contempt from patriots in this great nation. It is possible to note a tantrum, without catering to it. Outside of loons like them, who is buying into their crap.
The next time I read about them, the WBC, that is, I hope it is in obituary columns!

The people of the Westboro Baptist Church should be proud of CPL. Kevin Reinhard
and all The Military to protect there right and other people right for thier freeodms.
They are doing Gods Works. Without the men and women in Uniforms we would not have any freedoms. Think about this when you are protesting.

The article is very informational - even makes me hate those nasty UnAmerican Westboro jokers even more. Wouldn't it be something if the Police got called away from the escort and the protestors were left alone to defend themselves? I am sure the Veterans and Patriots in attendance would show a little Jersey Justice love toward them. We can only hope.
On the other hand, how despicable is it that we must concern ourselves with such nonsense rather than pay our respects and honor the warriors who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we may continue to live free, in liberty, and not have to fight terrorists in our streets? If the apalling acts of these Westboro nonBaptists does not get your ire, what does?

All the individuals and groups that paid their respects to Cpl. Reinhard and his family this weekend at the funeral home showed how unconcerned they are with the WBC. Their focus was on Cpl. Reinhard and his family.
Apparently, they know the same God that will honor this fallen Marine will also ensure the WBC loons get, in his time and his way, their just rewards.
Rest in honor and peace Cpl. Reinhard!
