Six Months After Parking Deck Collapse, Burlington Coat Factory's Deck Hasn't Been Fixed

But cars still park right next to the temporary fencing that cordones off the huge hole where a section of parking deck was once erected

Last August, the parking deck of the then-opened Burlington Coat Factory collapsed. The huge hole in the deck was fenced off, with the expectation that the deck would be repaired. Six months later, shoppers flock to the discount clothing store. Some even park right next to the temporary fence that's still in place. The debris has been swept away. But the parking deck still has a gaping hole where the concrete slabs once stood. The store, once owned by Sears which operated The Great Indoors, an upscale furnishing center, there, the property is now owned and managed by Onyx Equities. The company said that the store would open in September, and it did - a month to the day the deck collapsed. It's still unclear exactly why caused the deck …

Who's In Charge of the Parking Deck Collapse?

Town officials say the state has jurisdiction for the collapsed Great Indoors parking deck at Woodbridge Crossing, while NJ spokesmen say it was always Woodbridge's responsibility. Meanwhile, the building owner is handling it by themselves.

Who is in charge of oversight for the parking deck that collapsed at the former Great Indoors site in Woodbridge remains almost as big a mystery as the cause of the deck failure itself. Woodbridge officials say that they never had any responsibility for the parking deck inspection, pointing to state authorities who they say were in charge of the deck. But according to Lisa Ryan, spokeswoman for the NJ Department of Community Affairs (DCA), her agency never had anything to do with the Woodbridge parking deck, or any parking decks, period. "We don't have jurisdiction over parking decks, nor would DCA have anything on repairs for the parking garage," Ryan said. "That responsibility would all be Woodbridge's." Ryan said that DCA officials …

It seems that nothing is being done about the collasped parking deck, but work on the building continues. Signs state that Burlington Coat Factory will be opening in just 3 days. No repairs to the stucture have taken place and who knows if any inspections for safety have been done. I certainly won't be risking my life for shopping.   more ›

Is the Rest of the Parking Deck Safe?

Tuesday's collapse of part of the Woodbridge Crossing strip mall's parking deck is raising concerns about the safety of the rest of the structure.

It may be months before the cause of the sudden collapse of part of the parking deck at the renovated store where the Burlington Coat Factory was to open this fall may be known. The corner of the deck, upon which was a forklift and a van, pancaked down onto the lower part of the parking garage Tuesday, August 21, leaving officials and building authorities baffled as to what happened. No one was injured in the incident. But the collapse has also raised concerns about whether the rest of the parking deck at the Woodbridge Crossing strip mall is safe. Trying to find out, though, who is in charge of investigating the cause of the parking deck collapse isn't easy. It appears that the NJ Division of Community Affairs (DCA) is responsible for …

Hey Foxxy, was that a paid political announcement. So I called it the Woodbridge Center Mall. It is a well known point of reference and one the press, like the AP (http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local/new_jersey&id=8782047) and other news services used as well. So, if the township doesn't have to make statements about "safety", why did they? Why did they send, by their on …   more ›

Questions Raised About Cause of Deck Collapse

Was it the 9,000 lb. forklift in front of the Burlington Coat Factory store at a weak point of the Woodbridge Crossing parking deck?

The investigation into the cause of Tuesday's parking deck collapse at Woodbridge Crossing has barely begun, but speculation has already started into what might have caused the collapse. Some of the questions centered on the forklift that was on the top deck when it crashed into the lower level, and on the white van that was also totaled by the pancaking concrete slab. "I'm not the engineer of the parking deck, I don't know what each square inch is rated for, but if you wanted to concentrate a lot of weight in one small, specific area, a forklift is the best way to do it," said Philip Pretto, a man who knows his forklifts. He's the operations manager for EFR Corporation in Somerset, a company that bills itself as "the one stop shop" for …

Good points. The entire deck structure, pilings, footings and joints need to be inspected for structural integrity. The property owner would be wise to check the building as well. Let;s hope Burlington Factory demand that level of inspection.   more ›

Ceremonial 'Groundbreaking' Set for New Burlington Coat Factory

Work on the store has been going on for months, and it won't open until the fall.

Since the news broke in March that the Burlington Coat Factory would be moving into the old Great Indoors retail space in Woodbridge, the vacant store has been humming. Workers were going in and out of the store - some laying down new flooring, others working on sheetrock - all with the goal of readying the store for a fall opening. Despite all the work that has already done for months in revamping the Great Indoors retail space into a habitation fit for the Burlington Coat Factory, Mayor John McCormac will be holding a sort of groundbreaking photo op at the site on Tuesday, June 11, at 11 am. Burlington Coat Factory dignitaries Senior Vice President Russell Schaller and Regional Vice President Jeff Armenti are expected to attend the …

Burlington Coat Factory Will Be Opening in Woodbridge

Come this fall, the retail clothing discounter will be opening a 70,000 sq. ft. store in the former The Great Indoors space.

With the recession, every town has had its share of store closings and retail that's gone belly up. Few shopping centers, though, have had as much hard luck as Woodbridge Crossing. Inside of the few years, major retailers who were tenants at Woodbridge Crossing shuttered their stores: Linens and Things and Circuit City. But it was when The Great Indoors, a Sears entity, closed its Woodbridge anchor store in 2009 that the large bi-level outdoor mall began to resemble a ghost town. Some stores remain, such as Thomasville Furniture and Party City. But the most action the empty stores got was this fall, when Woodbridge High School used the vacant Linens and Things space for a Halloween haunted house fundraiser. Things might be turning around, …
