Dog with Hacked Ears Tied Up at Woodbridge School

A Cane Corso dog was found abandoned at Port Reading School #9 Tuesday with his ears cut away to his head.

It's the kind of that thing guaranteed to turn your stomach. A Cane Corso dog, now recuperating at the Woodbridge Animal Shelter, was found Tuesday, tied to the door at Port Reading School #9. The black mastiff-type dog, with a white marking on his chest, had apparently been the recipient of a home-done ear cropping. The breed, considered by the American Kennel Club to have been a relatively rare dog native to Italy, has naturally floppy ears. According to the Cane Corso Coalition, ear cropping of the breed is "preferred by many," but is also illegal in some countries. The dog was "frightened and defensive" when he was found, according to volunteers at the shelter. The dog, they said, is older, dirty, and probably kept outdoors. The …

Keeping Pets and Owners Together at the Free Pet Food Bank

Marge Petrow and the Woodbridge Pet Shelter volunteers run a pet food bank that is helping to keep owners and pets at home.

Feeding two Rottweilers is an economic feat in the best of times. But when Donna's husband lost his job over two years ago, keeping up with the appetites of their two large breed dogs - both of which have medical issues - became an economic problem they couldn't handle. It was quickly becoming a choice between paying to feed the canines and paying for the thyroid and pain medication the dogs need. "I've been struggling," Donna said. "It's very hard when we've got almost no money coming in." That was when Donna finally lucked out - she heard from her neighbors that Marge Petrow, the volunteer coordinator for the Woodbridge Animal Shelter, was giving away free pet food. For Donna, a Woodbridge resident, it was a godsend. "I know Marge from …

Do You Know Me?

Can you help find the owners of this sweet pooch?

The Woodbridge Animal Shelter has a new resident, but both them and the dog who is now sheltered there would rather his family came and picked him up. The male Wheaton Terrier was found in Sewaren on Wednesday. Shelter officials estimate him to be at least 7 years old. Anyone with information on the dog should contact the shelter. Their number is 732-855-0600, ext. 5007. Follow Woodbridge Patch on Facebook, Twitter and sign up for the daily newsletter.

Woodbridge Animal Shelter Shines Through Hurricane Sandy

Slowly but surely, the haven for pet rescue and adoption is getting back up to speed.

Things have been rough for the Woodbridge Animal Shelter, ever since Hurricane Sandy blew through town and the storm surge flooded the pet facility. But bit by bit, the animal shelter and its volunteers are putting it all back together again. "We have to be patient," said Marge Petrow, the volunteer coordinator for the shelter. "It's a tough time now." The shelter, located on Woodbridge Avenue in the Sewaren section of the township, suffered from water overflowing the banks of a nearby tributary of the Woodbridge River. The first floor of the facility was flooded, while volunteers were busy moving the pets to another floor of the building. Ever since then, they've been redoing the building and repairing the damage, and doing fundraising …
