Six Months After Parking Deck Collapse, Burlington Coat Factory's Deck Hasn't Been Fixed

But cars still park right next to the temporary fencing that cordones off the huge hole where a section of parking deck was once erected

Last August, the parking deck of the then-opened Burlington Coat Factory collapsed. The huge hole in the deck was fenced off, with the expectation that the deck would be repaired. Six months later, shoppers flock to the discount clothing store. Some even park right next to the temporary fence that's still in place. The debris has been swept away. But the parking deck still has a gaping hole where the concrete slabs once stood. The store, once owned by Sears which operated The Great Indoors, an upscale furnishing center, there, the property is now owned and managed by Onyx Equities. The company said that the store would open in September, and it did - a month to the day the deck collapsed. It's still unclear exactly why caused the deck …

48 Hours to Grand Opening - and Still a Hole in the Deck

So far, there has been no official assurance that the parking deck of the Burlington Coat Factory, set to open on Friday, is safe - especially since it's the only way to get into the store.

The Burlington Coat Factory is planning its grand opening on Friday, but you couldn't tell by the condition of the parking deck, part of which collapsed last month. The gaping hole in the deck is still there, and though there are a few workers strolling around the collapse site, there is little evidence there's a rush to put the deck back together before the retailer opens its doors on Friday. Or some of their doors. One set of doors opens out into thin air, being right over the collapsed part of the deck. There is no entrance into the Burlington Coat Factory, except via the parking deck. There is little to no information being released by Onyx Equities, the Woodbridge-based property owner of the site, or Woodbridge Township, which at …

Well never mind the hole in the deck. My wife and I visited Burlington today Sat 9-22-12 and found at least one dozen loss prevention personal hovering near the front of the store. We walked the store and on our way out I made a comment to one of the loss prevention personal "expecting a lot of thieves". The reply was oh yes especially with a new store opening also this is a high theft area. I …   more ›

Burlington Coat Factory Will Open Friday - With or Without a Parking Deck

The retail store is slated to have its grand opening a month to the day part of the parking deck collapsed. The cause is still unknown.

Come hell, high water, or the lack of a functional parking deck, the Burlington Coat Factory is going to open on time. That's the word from the owners of the new retail store, which is set for its grand opening this Friday, September 21 - exactly a month after a portion of the parking deck that fronts the store suddenly collapsed for reasons still unknown. "It's meant to open on the 21st, and it is opening on the 21st," said Christa Segalini, spokeswoman for Woodbridge-based Onyx Equities, the company that owns and manages the building. "I'm not sure if the parking deck will be open. The store is definitely opening." In the month since the collapse on August 21, there has been little to no word on the cause of the deck collapse, or who is…

I think Burlington actually opened yesterday. I wonder how many people showed up? Still no repairs to the parking deck. How can they be allowed to open? It really makes no sense. The parking deck has not yet been deemed safe and I think we have regulations that state businesses must have ample parking.   more ›

Who's In Charge of the Parking Deck Collapse?

Town officials say the state has jurisdiction for the collapsed Great Indoors parking deck at Woodbridge Crossing, while NJ spokesmen say it was always Woodbridge's responsibility. Meanwhile, the building owner is handling it by themselves.

Who is in charge of oversight for the parking deck that collapsed at the former Great Indoors site in Woodbridge remains almost as big a mystery as the cause of the deck failure itself. Woodbridge officials say that they never had any responsibility for the parking deck inspection, pointing to state authorities who they say were in charge of the deck. But according to Lisa Ryan, spokeswoman for the NJ Department of Community Affairs (DCA), her agency never had anything to do with the Woodbridge parking deck, or any parking decks, period. "We don't have jurisdiction over parking decks, nor would DCA have anything on repairs for the parking garage," Ryan said. "That responsibility would all be Woodbridge's." Ryan said that DCA officials …

It seems that nothing is being done about the collasped parking deck, but work on the building continues. Signs state that Burlington Coat Factory will be opening in just 3 days. No repairs to the stucture have taken place and who knows if any inspections for safety have been done. I certainly won't be risking my life for shopping.   more ›

Is the Rest of the Parking Deck Safe?

Tuesday's collapse of part of the Woodbridge Crossing strip mall's parking deck is raising concerns about the safety of the rest of the structure.

It may be months before the cause of the sudden collapse of part of the parking deck at the renovated store where the Burlington Coat Factory was to open this fall may be known. The corner of the deck, upon which was a forklift and a van, pancaked down onto the lower part of the parking garage Tuesday, August 21, leaving officials and building authorities baffled as to what happened. No one was injured in the incident. But the collapse has also raised concerns about whether the rest of the parking deck at the Woodbridge Crossing strip mall is safe. Trying to find out, though, who is in charge of investigating the cause of the parking deck collapse isn't easy. It appears that the NJ Division of Community Affairs (DCA) is responsible for …

Hey Foxxy, was that a paid political announcement. So I called it the Woodbridge Center Mall. It is a well known point of reference and one the press, like the AP (http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local/new_jersey&id=8782047) and other news services used as well. So, if the township doesn't have to make statements about "safety", why did they? Why did they send, by their on …   more ›

Questions Raised About Cause of Deck Collapse

Was it the 9,000 lb. forklift in front of the Burlington Coat Factory store at a weak point of the Woodbridge Crossing parking deck?

The investigation into the cause of Tuesday's parking deck collapse at Woodbridge Crossing has barely begun, but speculation has already started into what might have caused the collapse. Some of the questions centered on the forklift that was on the top deck when it crashed into the lower level, and on the white van that was also totaled by the pancaking concrete slab. "I'm not the engineer of the parking deck, I don't know what each square inch is rated for, but if you wanted to concentrate a lot of weight in one small, specific area, a forklift is the best way to do it," said Philip Pretto, a man who knows his forklifts. He's the operations manager for EFR Corporation in Somerset, a company that bills itself as "the one stop shop" for …

Good points. The entire deck structure, pilings, footings and joints need to be inspected for structural integrity. The property owner would be wise to check the building as well. Let;s hope Burlington Factory demand that level of inspection.   more ›

Great Indoors Parking Garage Collapses

The soon-to-be new Burlington Coat Factory at Woodbridge Crossing will not be opening on time. The parking deck under one end of the store collapsed.

Laborers working on the exterior of the new Burlington Coat Factory in Woodbridge thought there was a chance that rain might interrupt their efforts to ready the new store for its opening this fall. Instead, what stopped all work on the building was the sudden collapse of the parking garage undergirding the anchor store. A corner section of second floor of the parking garage "just collapsed", said one of the workers who was nearby when it happened at around 2:30 pm Tuesday. "It sounded like an earthquake. We all just ran," he said. No one was injured in the collapse, but employees in the few stores still open in Woodbridge Crossing - the strip mall fronting Route 1 on Green Street where the new Burlington store will be located - were …
