Suspect Who Tried to Steal Voter's Vehicle Is Nabbed After Parkway Footchase

Woodbridge and Clark police gave chase to a car thief out to deprive a voter of his vehicle.

A crook who tried to steal the vehicle of a man who was going to vote in Colonia is in police custody. A Colonia man had been at Colonia Middle School to cast his vote around 1:45 pm, according to Woodbridge Police Lieut. Joseph Goodheart. When the voter emerged from the polling place, he found the suspect seated in his car, where he was allegedly trying to steal the vehicle. The victim protested, the suspect threw a punch at him, then fled on foot to the nearby Garden State Parkway, into neighboring Clark Township. Clark Police Chief Alan Scherb told Clark Patch that the suspect ran into a backyard on State Street, then managed to run across the north and southbound lanes of the Parkway, and finally was apprehended by Clark Police in the…

School District is Handling Issues with New Substitute Teachers, Superintendent Says

Dr. John Crowe said that the Woodbridge School District is handling the problems with new subs employed through an outsourcing firm.

Parents of some Woodbridge students have been expressing doubt about substitute teachers being brought into the district by an outside firm subcontracted for the job. The charges have run the gamut from substitutes who can barely speak English, to subs who have engaged in corporal punishment.  Most of the rumors aren't true, and the ones that might be "have been dealt with," said Woodbridge Schools Superintendent John Crowe. "Anytime we have a substitute we are unhappy with, those subs don't come back," Crowe said. Some parents and teachers have been complaining about the substitutes being installed in Woodbridge since the school district stopped their own in-house sub program and outsourced substitute work to a company called …

Woodbridge Science Students Show Off Work at Symposium

Colonia High School hosted a science symposium, where students spoke and displayed their work.

Showcasing the efforts of students laboring in science research, Colonia High School hosted Science Symposium 2011. It was an opportunity for the science students of Woodbridge's three high schools to strut the stuff they've worked on all year to an appreciative and frequently fascinated audience.  “The students are the scientists,” explained James Danch, a Science Research teacher at Colonia High School. The program is modeled after graduate-level science programs, with the teacher acting more as a mentor towards students who do research in fields of personal interest.  “They are the ones discovering new things,” Danch said.   Science Research, which is designed as a three-year program, requires that students design their experiments, …

Students Shoot From the Heart in LeGrand Fundraiser

Colonia Middle School students and staff raised over $5,000 for injured Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand

Eric LeGrand may not be a Colonia Middle School alumnus, but that's a mere technicality. The CMS sixth to eighth graders, who attend school in the Colonia section of Woodbridge where LeGrand graduated from high school in 2008, took the injured Rutgers football player into their hearts Tuesday with a series of fundraisers that netted over $5,000 for his rehabilitation. "It's a wonderful event. The kids and the teachers worked their hearts out for Eric," said CMS Principal Cyndi Lagunovich, who was clearly moved by their efforts. LeGrand, a Rutgers University defensive tackle, suffered a spinal cord injury during a grueling game at the Meadowlands on Oct. 16. The entire school was involved with fundraisers, from the school's home economics …
