Last August, the parking deck of the then-opened Burlington Coat Factory collapsed. The huge hole in the deck was fenced off, with the expectation that the deck would be repaired. Six months later, shoppers flock to the discount clothing store. Some even park right next to the temporary fence that's still in place. The debris has been swept away. But the parking deck still has a gaping hole where the concrete slabs once stood. At long last, the old A&P building on St. Georges Avenue has a tenant, albeit a very temporary one. Halloween City is getting ready to open at the supermarket building, which closed two years ago. Everything's all set, except for one minor thing: the town's building department hasn't given its permission yet for the store to open. "We're waiting for the OK," said Kirsten, the store's general manager. "They said we were missing a few ceiling tiles." The A&P building was in foreclosure last year, and is still up for sale. The Burlington Coat Factory is planning its grand opening on Friday, but you couldn't tell by the condition of the parking deck, part of which collapsed last month. The gaping hole in the deck is still there, and though there are a few workers strolling around the collapse site, there is little evidence there's a rush to put the deck back together before the retailer opens its doors on Friday. Town officials say the state has jurisdiction for the collapsed Great Indoors parking deck at Woodbridge Crossing, while NJ spokesmen say it was always Woodbridge's responsibility. Meanwhile, the building owner is handling it by themselves.
Who is in charge of oversight for the parking deck that collapsed at the former Great Indoors site in Woodbridge remains almost as big a mystery as the cause of the deck failure itself. Woodbridge officials say that they never had any responsibility for the parking deck inspection, pointing to state authorities who they say were in charge of the deck. But according to Lisa Ryan, spokeswoman for the NJ Department of Community Affairs (DCA), her agency never had anything to do with the Woodbridge parking deck, or any parking decks, period. Laborers working on the exterior of the new Burlington Coat Factory in Woodbridge thought there was a chance that rain might interrupt their efforts to ready the new store for its opening this fall. Instead, what stopped all work on the building was the sudden collapse of the parking garage undergirding the anchor store.
