The deadline for filing petitions for the June primary shows some interesting developments in Woodbridge ward council races this year.
One way or the other, there will be changes in the makeup of the Woodbridge Township Council come November, at least among the ward seats which are all up for grabs. Two longtime ward councilmen - Charles Kenny and Bob Luban - will not be returning to their council seats. Kenny is making a run for Middlesex County freeholder on the Democrat ticket, while Luban will be running on the Republican slate for the State Senate seat for the 19th District. Kenny has held his First Ward, which includes Woodbridge Proper and Sewaren, since 1998. Luban has represented Colonia in the Fifth Ward for 28 years. The challengers who will be running for the First Ward are Nancy Drumm, a marketing and membership director for the YMCA. Drumm, who is a …

Twenty-eight year Woodbridge Council veteran Bob Luban is seeking to run as a Republican to nab 19th District incumbent State Senator Joe Vitale's seat.
After 28 years in office, Woodbridge Fifth Ward Councilman Bob Luban announced he won't seeking reelection after his term expires at the end of this year. But Luban isn't retiring from politics. The announcement of his retirement from town council coincided with another bit of news: Luban will be seeking to run on the Republican ticket for the 19th District State Senate seat. "With all my years in government, I know how to get things done," Luban said. "I'm going to do the same thorough job for the people of the 19th District as I've done for my constituents in Colonia." If Luban garners the Republican nod at the county convention next month, he'll be facing long term incumbent State Senator Joseph Vitale, a Democrat. One thing Luban said …

Councilman Bob Luban and former municipal prosecutor Christopher Struben and their slates will face off in Tuesday's primary contest.
One thing Tuesday's Republican primary won't be is placid. That's because Councilman Bob Luban and former township prosecutor Christopher Struben are both running for the party line for the mayoral nomination, and both admit there is little love lost between the two competing Republicans. "Bob Luban believes he's entitled to perks at the taxpayers' expense. I don't. I'm a real Republican," said Struben, who - not coincidentally - is running on the "Right Choice for Real Republicans" line. Luban, the council's sole Republican, resolutely insists his target isn't Struben - it's Mayor John McCormac, the incumbent Democrat whom Tuesday's Republican primary winner will be facing in November. "Struben is puzzling. He keeps saying he's …

The issue of repaving the Hungarian Club parking lot has inadverently brought up the issue of who owns the land in the first place.
For decades, the Hungarian American Citizens Club has been as rock solid as the foundation of the impregnable brick clubhouse they erected on Port Reading Ave. in the early 1960s. Generations of kids and their families of Hungarian descent, and of every nationality, have filtered through the Hungarian American Club at one time or another, because of the clubhouse's popularity as the Hungarian Manor, a hall rental site. So many events go on there, it's almost impossible to have lived in Woodbridge any length of time and not have visited the club at least once. Irme Herczeg, one of three trustees who oversees the club and its membership, has always been involved in the upkeep of the building and grounds. He and the other members thought it …

WTRO committee members approved Susan Boros for the at-large council seat nomination; Councilman Bob Luban will head the ticket as the mayoral nominee.
Susan Boros will replace Nelson Diaz as an official candidate in the June primary for one of the at-large council seats on the Republican slate. Committee members met Monday night to vote on the Woodbridge Township Republican Organization's (WTRO) list of recommended candidates for the at-large council slots. The WTRO had initially put forward Diaz as a candidate, but the offer was rescinded by the organization.* The WTRO executive board decided to replace Diaz with Boros, and made that recommendation to committee members. Diaz, the WTRO member said, did not resign the council seat nomination of his own accord. The committee members approved Councilman Bob Luban to head the ticket by taking the Republican nomination for the mayor's seat. …

To few residents' surprise, the town council approved the creation of two civilian police director positions to take over the township's police department.
It didn't come as much of a surprise when the Democratic majority on the Woodbridge council voted Tuesday night to approve Mayor John McCormac's push to impose a civilian police director and assistant director on the township's police department. It wasn't going to be a night for the close inspection or questioning of the ordinances and resolutions that would come before the council, though. Part of the reason was because of the change in the council's meeting schedule. Since the beginning of the year, the governing body changed the frequency of its meetings from weekly to bimonthly. That meant that an extraordinary amount of business would have to be compressed into one of the now-twice monthly sessions for the council's perusal and …

The sole Republican councilman said he's "disappointed" that the mayor brought partisan politics to non-political event.
When Mayor John McCormac brought almost the entire town council to an interfaith service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, he introduced them and his new council choice, Kyle Anderson, to the assembled crowd. He also made a note that "one person" from the council was not in attendance - Councilman Bob Luban, the council's only Republican. Rumor has it that Luban may also be the Republican candidate McCormac will face in November, when the mayor himself will be up for reelection. The Republican councilman was a bit perplexed about why McCormac would go to such lengths to mention his absence from the event, without mentioning his name. "If I had been invited, I'd have been happy to come. I think it's unfortunate that the mayor …

Is it Party time again? The voters in Woodbridge Township will, in a few months, have an opportunity to tell their elected government if they want chance or more of the same. For me, the answer is easy: CHANGE! But not for change sake alone. My feelings about the McCormac administration, its tactics, policies, bonds, taxing, SPENDING, more taxing, bonding and more SPENDING shenanigans are well …   more ›
