POLL: Are You Comfortable with Red Light Cameras?

Do you think the NJDOT fixed the issue when they shut down and fixed problematic red light cameras in June?

There's no question that red light camera intersections are a hot topic throughout New Jersey; Woodbridge is no exception. The red light camera outpost on Route 1 and Avenel Street was the only one of the four in the township that was shut down when the NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT) instituted a reworking of the timing system on affected signal lights throughout the state. Some drivers, though, hate the program so much they think that the shrouding of pedestrian signal lights at the Avenel Street intersection is because the powers-that-be are so upset by the loss of revenue that they don't want drivers to be warned that the light is about to change - even if that means putting pedestrians at risk. Other officials say it's a …

POLL: Is New Jersey Taking Too Long with Medical Marijuana?

Today sick patients can sign up for an ID card to buy pot to help their pain - except there is no place yet set up in NJ where they can legally make the purchase.

Remember medical marijuana? Today it's back in a big way: the NJ Department of Health is opening up a marijuana registry list so seriously sick patients who want the wacky weed to take away their pain will get an ID card to buy the stuff. The patient or a caregiver can now sign up with the state, pay a $200 fee, and be legally entitled to purchase pot for their illness through the Medicinal Marijuana Program (MMP). The problem, though, is that there isn't any place in New Jersey where you can legally buy pot - at least, not any place that resembles a medical dispensary. That's because the same law that enabled the use of marijuana for chronic, even terminal, illnesses established Alternative Treatment Centers (ATC) where pot can be …

Woodbridge Wins $28K EPA Grant to Teach Students About Pollution in Keasbey

The money is going to educate students in the township's three high schools about pollution at the Keasbey Superfund site along the Raritan River

Woodbridge just won an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) award to teach students from the township's three high schools about the causes of pollution along the Raritan River - particularly about the Keasbey brownfield that may someday be turned into a riverside oasis. The $27,800 grant is to be used for the "Woodbridge Township Wetlands Restoration Education Project," according to an EPA press release. The money is to be devoted to educational activities at the old Nuodex site in the Keasbey section of the township, an area which Mayor John McCormac is hoping to turn into a waterfront park. Just last week, the township announced yet again that a 700 megawatt gas-powered electric generation facility will be located on the site.  It's …

NJ Transit Fares Will Not Increase Under 2013 Budget

Capital program includes funding for several new trains and buses

Commuting can be stressful and time consuming, but it seems no matter how you slice it it's always expensive. Even buying a monthly discounted rail ticket, it costs $4,632 a year to trek back and forth from the Aberdeen-Matawan NJ Transit Station to New York City. Hopping on the bus is only slightly cheaper, totalling $3,336 a year. With that in mind, it may come as a relief to commuters that NJ Transit will not be upping their fares in 2013. The Board of Directors recently approved a $1.904 billion operating budget and a $1.152 billion capital program for the 2013 fiscal year, which began on July 1, 2012, according to a press release from the company. Fares account for $894.2 million, which is nearly half, of the operating budget. The …

Affordable Housing Fight Goes Back to the Courts

Housing advocates and municipalities try to prevent the state from taking their funds.

The battle between the Christie administration and the Fair Share Housing Center continues. This time, the two sides are going to court Friday over as much as $200 million in local affordable housing trust funds. So far, the Appellate Division of Superior Court has been kind to the Cherry Hill-based housing advocates, but this case could be a different story. To help balance the budget, Gov. Chris Christie recommended the state use the trust fund money. The administration appears to be within its legal right to do so, as the law creating the funds—and the developer fees that municipalities levy to subsidize them—specified municipalities had to “commit to spend” the money within four years. The clock strikes midnight on July 17. But as …

Lt. Gov's Husband Elevated to Appellate Judge

Michael Guadagno moves on up after being a Superior Court judge

Superior Court Judge Michael Guadagno, the husband of Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, has been elevated to the Appellate Division effective Aug. 1, state Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner announced late Tuesday.     Guadagno, a Monmouth Beach resident, was appointed to the bench in 2005 by Gov. Richard Codey. He served as a family court judge in Monmouth County until 2008 when he was transferred to the family court in Ocean County. In 2010, he returned to Monmouth County as presiding judge of the family court. He served a temporary assignment to the Appellate Division earlier this year. The Appellate Division of the Superior Court is the state's intermediate appellate court, according to a statement from the New Jersey Judiciary. The …

State High Court to Christie: COAH Stays

Council on Affordable Housing earns reprieve as Supreme Court upholds appellate ruling protecting the state agency

Gov. Chris Christie still cannot make the state Council on Affordable Housing disappear, now that the New Jersey Supreme Court refused to stay an appellate court ruling that barred his action. Monday's ruling is not the last word on the case, since the high court only rejected the stay, not the governor's appeal. But it reaffirms that, at least for now, the council has exclusive jurisdiction over affordable housing regulations in the executive branch. In March, the appellate court found that Christie "exceeded his authority" under the state constitution by attempting to eliminate an agency created by the Legislature. Three months later, though, the council's former link on the state website still redirects to a page announcing "the …

Big Accounting Firm Gets Millions to Move Five Miles

EisnerAmper is getting millions in state grants and tax credits to move from Edison to Metropark in Iselin - and to keep and create jobs in New Jersey.

One of the biggest accounting firms in the country has snagged $1.826 million in grant money and $1.147 million in tax credits to move five miles from Edison to Metropark in Iselin and create 100 new jobs. The money was awarded to EisnerAmper by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) as an incentive for the company keep its 255 Edison-based employees in the state, rather than moving to out-of-state locations.  The application of EisnerAmper, as well as other companies deemed to be 'at risk' of departing New Jersey, is carefully scrutinized before awards are made. "The staff decides what's at risk and what's not. A great deal of staff work goes into it, looking at the request and determining a whole host of things," said …

Governor Honors Turcotte This Week

The Hopelawn firefighter who died at the scene of fire this year will have flags at the NJ Statehouse lowered in his memory this week.

It was a sad day in January when Bruce Turcotte, a former Hopelawn fire chief, died at the scene of a Menlo Park Terrace fire. This week, though, the state government honored Turcotte's service. Gov. Chris Christie issued a proclamation that flags at the State House in Trenton would be flown at half-mast the week of June 4 in Turcotte's honor. The flag-lowering was to "recognize [Turcotte's] committment to the welfare and safety of others, to mark his passing, to honor his memory, and to remember his many friends and family as they mourn their tragic loss," said the proclamation signed by the governor. The honor marked the state's recognition of Turcotte's "dedication, determination, and selfless devotion to the welfare and safety of …

POLL: Will You Be Voting in Today's Primary?

Or did you forget there was one? Take the poll and tell us!

If you're a Democrat who lives in Woodbridge, you might not have much of a reason to go to the polls in today's primary. That's because there are no contested races on the Democratic side.  The Republican primary, though, is awash in contests today, from President to Senate to House of Representatives choices - and some of the races have been pretty contentious. If you are a Democrat, will you vote today, even though there are no contests? If so, why? Registered Republicans, will you be voting in the primary? Tell us who your pick is, and for what seats. And if you're an independent, what do you think about today's primary races? A snooze or a battle to November? Take the poll and post your thoughts.

Got a Hot Tip?
