New Skate Park Proposed in Colonia
It would be the second park in the township, although the cost is not yet known
A new skate park may be built behind the Evergreen Teen Center in Colonia making it the second one in the township. The Township Council introduced a bond ordinance at their reorganization meeting on Jan. 4 for the authorization of various public improvements and the acquisition of new additional or replacement equipment and machinery in the amount of $7.15 million. Township officials said among the amount bonded includes enough money to fund the proposed new skate park. "We have not yet determined a hard cost for the facility," said John Hagerty, communications director for the township. "The park will be a smaller scale than the one that is already in place." Skateparks should be treated no differently than playgrounds, ball fields or basketball courts, none of which have security, fences (unless to keep a ball in) or fees. Why does a skatepark need security? The irony is that your town charges a small fee to pay a teenager to sit there and watch other teenagers skate. Take away the "security" and so goes the need for a fee...   more ›
