11 Years Later, Woodbridge is Beetle-Free

You won't see any Asian longhored beetles in this township.

It's been over a decade since the Asian longhorned beetles, a nuisance tree-eating bug with no natural known enemies, started destroying woods in Woodbridge and other communities. On Thursday, the NJ Secretary of Agriculture Douglas Fisher declared Woodbridge and the rest of the state to be officially free of the pests. “We could not have accomplished this eradication without this coalition of federal, state, and local agencies, and of course, the citizens of New Jersey, whose vigilance was critical in this fight," Fisher said in a statement. Fisher was joined by other federal, state, and local officials in a tree planting ceremony in neighboring Linden - another of the municipalities whose trees were devastated by the beetle. The beetle …

Rahway Substation Failure Causes Power Outages in Woodbridge Area

It felt like Hurricane Sandy all over again Tuesday, even if just for a few short hours.

It's been a month since Hurricane Sandy plunged much of the central New Jersey area in darkness. In some parts of Woodbridge and the surrounding area Tuesday, it felt like Hurricane Sandy all over again. That's because there was an equipment failure at the PSE&G Rahway substation, said company spokesman Annette L. Hicks.  "Crews are on their way to assess the situation," Hicks said in an email. There was no early indication Tuesday night when the power would be turned back on for those who lost service. Patricia Abrantes of Avenel said that the electricity went out in her home around 2 pm. The power was back on about 4 pm. Some areas of Woodbridge Proper also lost electrical service Tuesday morning for short spurts of time. But just when …

Thanks, was wondering if the problem was at the substation at the generating station again. That subsation was flooded by Sandy and was the reason that Woodbridge was without power for so long.   more ›

Northeast Corridor Train Strikes Car in Rahway

One man suffered minor injuries, and train traffic is getting back to schedule following the early afternoon incident.

If you experienced some delays this afternoon on your way to or from New York City, it was likely due to a train versus car crash in Rahway. The incident occurred around noon, according to reports.  The train – which originated in Trenton and was headed for New York – struck the vehicle in Rahway, coming to a stop at New Brunswick Ave.  The victim in the car – an adult male - was taken to University Hospital with minor injuries, according to the NJ.com report. None of the approximately 900 on the train were injured, and were transferred to another train to continue their journey, according to the report. It was unclear exactly where the train struck the vehicle or how the vehicle wound up on the tracks in the first place, as the tracks …

Michael McDonald Brings Blue-Eyed Soul to UCPAC

The former Doobie Brother bought his band and his brand of "blue-eyed soul" to Rahway Sunday night.

Even if you think you don't know Michael McDonald, you probably do. If you don't recognize his familiar voice right away, you've probably seen him in recent years on American Idol or 30 Rock or performing the National Anthem prior to game one of this year's NBA Finals in Miami. McDonald – a five time Grammy winner and former member of 70s stalwarts the Doobie Brothers – bought his solo tour to the Union County Performing Arts Center Sunday night, performing over a dozen hits and cover songs for the nearly sold-out crowd in Rahway. Taking the stage shortly after 8 PM, McDonald and his six-piece backing band kicked off the show with the sparse ballad “Peace,” McDonald explained that the song was originally written for a Christmas album, but …

Robert Wuhl Brings "Assume The Position" Stand-Up Special to UCPAC

The Union Township native performed material from his critically acclaimed HBO special at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway

Arliss finally returned home. Robert Wuhl, who grew up in nearby Union and played sports agent Arliss Michaels on the comedy series Arli$$, brought his theater tour based on the HBO comedy special of the same name to the Performing Arts Center in Rahway, as the Union County Freeholders declared the day Robert Wuhl Day in Union County. In “Assume the Position,” Wuhl takes the audience through “the stories that made up America, and the stories America made up.”  It’s a humorous slant on American history, with Wuhl introducing, in a very teacherly fashion, a number of points about history – that history is popular culture, that history is based on a true story, etc – to delve into popular stories of our country.  He uses these points to bring…

"Still Life" Paints a Poignant Picture at UC Arts Center

"Still Life", a play by Alexander Dinelaris, shows scenes of love, life, and death, runs through January.

Can death be beautiful, and proud?  Should life be lived like each day is your last? These questions are repeatedly asked and shown in several different ways in “Still Life”, a play by Alexander Dinelaris, which is currently running at the Union County Arts Center Studio Theatre in Rahway, just minutes from Woodbridge. Presented by the Alliance Repertory Theatre Company and directed by Michael J. Driscoll, the play is set in the present day with simple, uncomplicated scenery and lighting.  Presented in two acts made up of several small scenes and situations, it centers on two characters - Carrie Ann, a photographer, who becomes afraid to pick up a camera, and Jeff, a trend analyst, who is tired of coming up with campaigns to promote …
