Pinching Pennies with Pets: In a Recession, Everybody Counts

Everyone's cutting back financially. But how does budgeting affect our furry family members?

It's not news that we've been in a recession. And it's not news that nearly every person in America has been affected by the economic downturn in one way or another - from senior citizens not getting a cost-of-living increase in their Social Security checks for the first time in 34 years in 2010; to couples going from single-income to double income, and then to double-income plus some part-time jobs; all the way down to kids not getting the latest $500 technology trend for the holidays - we're all feeling it. But there's one family member that many of us might not realize has been directly affected by the Great Recession - our pets. Our pets are family. We share our beds with them. We buy them sweaters. We have their photos on our Facebook…
