Funeral Service Set for Bishop Hughes, Second Head of the Metuchen Diocese

Bishop Edward Thomas Hughes, who led the Metuchen Diocese for a decade, passed away on Christmas Day at the age of 92.

The wake for Bishop Edward Thomas Hughes, who passed away on Chritmas Day and who served as Bishop for the Diocese of Metuchen for 10 years, has been set for Thursday, January 3. The wake and mass, which will be presided over by current Bishop Paul Gregory Bootkoski, will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen with a public visitation at 2 pm. A Mass of Commemoration will also take place on Thursday at 7:30 pm. with the funeral to held on Friday. Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, who was the founding bishop of the Metuchen Diocese in 1981, will officiate at the funeral service for Bishop Hughes on Friday, January 4, at 11 am at the Metuchen cathedral. POLL: Should St. Cecelia's School Close?

The parents and administrators did everything they could to keep St. Cecelia's School in Iselin open. Should they get another chance?

With the announcement that St. Cecelia's, a Catholic elementary school in the Iselin section of Woodbridge, would be closing its doors at the end of the school year, a lot of alumni of the school have felt a huge sense of loss. Catholic schools don't just educate Catholics kids anymore. Children of all faiths are sent by their parents to Catholic schools for what they feel is a more personal and better education than what they find in the public school system. The Metuchen diocese has said that the other Catholic schools in the township, such as St. James and St. John Vianney, are in good shape enrollment-wise, and don't face being shut down. Should St. Cecelia's School Close? Today it’s about the enrolment. If a school does not have enough students it just can’t go on. The expense to the Parish and the tuition cost just do not make sense. You do have to pay Teachers a higher wage today than when there were Nuns who took a vow of poverty and did not get a salary and did a great job educating. St. Cecelia's School in Iselin to Close at the End of the School Year

Declining enrollment and changing demographics are cited by the Metuchen Diocese in the decision to shutter the school.

The St. Cecelia's School webpage proudly announces that they've been in business for 50 years, and they're "looking forward to letting our light shine for another 50." It's not to be. A bad economy and declining enrollment has caused St. Cecelia's School in Iselin to announce they'll be shutting their doors at the end of the school year. Rev. Jerome Johnson, pastor of St. Cecelia Parish, made the announcement on Monday that Bishop Paul G.
