JFK Students Made a Difference: Parkway Trash Close to Being Picked Up

JFK High School's Eco-Friendly Club's efforts seem to be paying off: trash dumped between railroad tracks and Route 27 in Iselin isn't being ignored

High schoolers at John F. Kennedy High School in Iselin really wanted to make a difference. When members of the school's Eco-Friendly Club saw a mess blowing down Route 27 near MetroPark in Iselin and the Garden State Parkway entrance,  they didn't walk away. Club members approached the township to get permission to clean the trash up. They were told it was too dangerous for the students to be on the strip of land between railroad tracks and busy Route 27, and that New Jersey Transit had responsibility for the land. So the students put up an Internet petition to get the debris cleaned up, and within weeks, it's had an effect. There's just a small problem: New Jersey Transit has nothing to do with the MetroPark tracks, the land surrounding…

Victim Struck by Amtrak Train Has Been Identified

Donna Zoldan of Highland Park was killed yesterday on the Amtrak tracks in Edison, Amtrak officials said.

The woman who stepped out in front of an Amtrak train yesterday near Metropark has been identified. Donna Zoldan, 49, of Highland Park was killed October 10 when she was struck by the speeding train at approximately 12:12 p.m. on the tracks near Talmadge Road and Route 27 in Edison, according to Amtrak officials. The area is about 4-1/2 miles south of the Metropark station in the Iselin section of Woodbridge. The Amtrak train which struck Zoltan was travelling south from New York to Washington, DC, said Steve Kulm, Amtrak spokesman. There were no injuries to the 220 passengers on board the train or to the crew, Kulm said. "We transferred the passengers to another train," he added. The fatality did not disrupt train traffic as much as it …

Why? Because the country is rail-locked and pedestrian crossings a.k.a. crossings aren't there. Why is Steve Kuln who was a worthless railroad bought hand puppet in the Federal Railroad-bought Association doing as a talkin' head for Amtrak? Would it be because AMTRAK has the worse/best kill rate per mile traveled in the country for ANY business?   more ›

Alleged Metropark Carjacker Arrested in Trenton

NJ State Police took Bernard McIntyre into custody October 11 on suspicion he carjacked a cab somewhere between Iselin and New Brunswick.

The suspect in an October 2 carjacking of a taxi cab has been arrested. New Jersey State Police nabbed Bernard McIntyre at his home in Trenton early yesterday on a warrant put out by the Edison Police Department, according to Edison Police Sgt. Robert Dudash. The 52-year-old suspect was taken into custody without incident, he said. McIntyre allegedly hailed a cab at the Metropark train station in the Iselin section of Woodbridge last week. But somewhere between the ride between Metropark and the destination in New Brunswick, McIntyre allegedly pulled a gun on the Scooters Cab driver and forced him to drive to Trenton. The 71-year-old cab driver was released unharmed in Trenton, but McIntyre grabbed the cab, the driver's cash, and drove …

Police Release Suspect's Name and Photo in Metropark Carjacking

Edison Police are looking to question Trenton resident Bernard McIntyre in Tuesday's carjacking that started in Woodbridge and ended in Trenton.

The Edison Police Department has released the name and picture of a person of interest in the carjacking of a Woodbridge cab on Tuesday, where the driver was forced at gunpoint to drive to Trenton. Police are looking for Bernard McIntyre, 52, a Trenton resident who has been named as a suspect in the carjacking. A warrant has been issued for McIntyre on charges of carjacking and criminal restraint, said Edison Sgt. Robert J. Dudash, Jr. in a statement. The 71-year-old cab driver, who works for Scooters Taxi Service, picked up a fare at Metropark in the Iselin section of the township approximately 1 pm on October 2. The passenger wanted to be driven to New Brunswick, but once the cab driver arrived, the fare allegedly pulled a gun and …

Metropark Cab Driver Carjacked to Trenton

A driver with Scooters Taxi thought he was taking a $35 fare to New Brunswick. He wound up at gunpoint in Trenton - minus the cab and his cash.

A Woodbridge cab driver got the shock of his life Tuesday when a fare he picked up at Metropark turned into a gun-toting carjacker by the time he reached New Brunswick. The cab driver, who works for Scooters Taxi Service, picked up a man at the Iselin train station around 1 pm who wanted to be driven to New Brunswick, normally a $35 fare. When the cab driver reached New Brunswick, the fare pulled out a gun and told him to start driving to Trenton, said Valerie Finaldi of Scooters. "When they got to New Brunswick, that's when it happened," Finaldi said. "The fare said, 'you'll go where I tell you to go,' and he pulled out a gun." Needless to say, the cab driver had an unnerving 25-mile ride to Trenton down Route 1. When the driver arrived …

Car Plows Into Route 27 Guard Rail

The late afternoon accident added to traffic woes Thursday.

A motorist exiting the Garden State Parkway onto Route 27 in Iselin Thursday careened into the guard rail and added to rush hour headaches yesterday. The driver hit a guard rail next to the Metropark rail tracks, right across from the Parkway access road. The damaged car, with the bumper hanging off, was in a prime location to cause massive traffic delays on the well-travelled road.  The accident happened around 4:30 pm. Woodbridge police were on the seen to cordon off the disabled car.

UPDATE: South Brunswick Train Trestle Truck Hit Won't Impact Rail Service

Trains on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor won't be delayed, authorities said, after a tractor trailer sustained heavy damage attempting to cross under a bridge in South Brunswick.

A tractor trailer carrying water in South Brunswick, struck a train bridge in the township, causing fears that train traffic up and down Amtrak's Northeast Corridor might be disrupted. That, however, hasn't happened, officials said. The accident briefly delayed trains traveling on the northeast corridor, as there were concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge. Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole said engineers finished examining the damage at about 1:30 p.m. and reported no issues. The accident near Deans Lane has delayed trains traveling on the Amtrak line, which includes Metropark in Iselin, because of concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge. The halted train traffic, though, hasn't affected NJ Transit trains on the …

Big Accounting Firm Gets Millions to Move Five Miles

EisnerAmper is getting millions in state grants and tax credits to move from Edison to Metropark in Iselin - and to keep and create jobs in New Jersey.

One of the biggest accounting firms in the country has snagged $1.826 million in grant money and $1.147 million in tax credits to move five miles from Edison to Metropark in Iselin and create 100 new jobs. The money was awarded to EisnerAmper by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) as an incentive for the company keep its 255 Edison-based employees in the state, rather than moving to out-of-state locations.  The application of EisnerAmper, as well as other companies deemed to be 'at risk' of departing New Jersey, is carefully scrutinized before awards are made. "The staff decides what's at risk and what's not. A great deal of staff work goes into it, looking at the request and determining a whole host of things," said …

Pedestrian 'Beacon' Makes Route 27 Safer for Metropark Walkers

NJ Department of Transportation unveiled a talking device that will help people safely cross heavily-traveled Route 27 in Iselin.

Traffic crossings for pedestrians have just gone high tech in Iselin. The NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT) unveiled the latest in road crossing devices Wednesday - a pedestrian hybrid beacon - on heavily-traveled Route 27 at Magnolia Road, right across from Metropark. "It's a hot zone" for people trying to cross to the train station, NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said at the demonstration of how the beacon works. In the state, there were 162 fatalities last year among pedestrians. There haven't been any at that spot on Route 27, and Simpson said that the beacon will help keep it that way. About 800 people cross the street daily at that spot to make it to Metropark.  The beacon might seem to be like the old-fashioned buttons …
