Five Suspended in Wake of School Cheating Scandal

Two principals and three teachers from Ross Street and Avenel Street Schools were suspended following Monday's Board of Education meeting.

The fallout of the cheating scandal at a number of Woodbridge schools began to hit Monday night, as three teachers and two principals were suspended in the wake of the Office of Fiscal Accountability and Compliance’s (OFAC) initial report on cheating at Avenel Street School #4/5 and Ross Street School #11. Third grade teachers John Radzik and Lisa Savillo, both of Avenel Street School, and Stephanie Klecan, who taught at the same school in 2010-’11, as well as Avenel Street School Principal Dara Kurlander and former Ross Street School Principal Sharon Strack were each suspended with pay following a closed session at Monday’s Board of Education meeting at Oak Ridge Heights School #21 in Colonia.  Klecan most recently taught at Mawbey …

Woodbridge High School Makes NJ Monthly's Top 20 Most Improved Schools List

The high school that is under investigation by the state for cheating on standardized tests just made the list of NJ schools that have shown the most improvement - in areas such as standardized test scores.

One of Woodbridge Township's three high schools under investigation for allegations of cheating on standarized tests was just listed as one of the state's '20 most improved high schools' on a NJ Monthly report ranking secondary schools. In 2010, Woodbridge High School came in 229th out of New Jersey's 328 public high schools, according to the magazine's rankings.  This year, Woodbridge High jumped 59 points to achieve a ranking of 170th among the state's public high schools. NJ Monthly took special note of Woodbridge as one of the "Top 20 Most Improved High Schools" for 2012. For the first time, Woodbridge beat one of the two other high schools in the township in the magazine's ranking of secondary institutions by the dramatic 59-point …

rtmtech, I live in Woodbridge Township, and I think that the lack of concern about the cheating scandal stems from parents' dislike of these standardized tests. A lot of people view these tests as complete BS. No Child Left Behind requires that a school's average test scores improve each year, or else severe sanctions are levied against the school. However, the reality is that there is a limit to…   more ›

Board of Education approves Robert Zega as Assistant Superintendent

Zega replaces Lois Rotella, who stepped down from the position of Assisant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction earlier this month.

The Woodbridge school district will start the new year with a new Assistant Superintendent. The Board of Education voted Thursday to approve Dr. Robert Zega as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, replacing Lois Rotella, who abruptly stepped down from the position earlier this month. Following a 45-minute closed session, the board emerged and quickly moved to adopt a host of personnel moves, highlighted by the hiring of Zega “…upon the review and approval of a form of employment contract by the Executive County Superintendent of Schools.”  Zega will fill the position from September 1st through June 30th, 2013.  The board also authorized the Superintendent, Business Administrator, and Board Attorney “to take all steps …

Zega is a very nice man who seems to care about the children but just like the others, when the time comes he WILL be asked to compromise his morales, and for the sake of his overpaid job, he will fold like the rest of them. There is no winning! People use to say Crowe was a great Principal (couldnt imagine that), look what happened!   more ›

Superintendent Admits Woodbridge High School is Under Investigation

Yet another district school is being eyed by the State Dept. of Education on allegations of cheating.

All they had originally intended to do was hire a high school football coach. Instead, a special Woodbridge Board of Education meeting called Tuesday night mushroomed because of several difficult and painful subjects that have hit the school district in the past week. They included the possibility of suing a fake asbestos removal contractor who forged his credentials while treating nine Woodbridge schools for asbestos; the sudden and mysterious dismissal of the assistant schools superintendent from her job last week; and the ongoing state investigation into several Woodbridge schools based on allegations of cheating on standardized tests. But Tuesday night, one more school was added to the list of problematic institutions when Schools …

Kansas: I have been following these comments right from the beginning and am amazed at what is being said. I felt compelled to comment on yours because your and Kays comment brought out the worm. Your comment just proved a strong point....how the people who are related or even work together will have the backs of the wrong doers no matter what and have the nerve to turn it around and put it back …   more ›

Mystery Surrounds Woodbridge Assistant School Superintendent's Departure

Lois Rotella, the Woodbridge school district's assistant superintendent, is no longer employed by the BOE, and no one is saying what happened.

The sudden departure of the Woodbridge School District's second in command has set tongues wagging in the township. Lois Rotella, the longtime assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, was mysteriously missing from her job in the last week. Board of Education administrators have not returned repeated phone calls about what happened to Rotella, and whether her leaving was her choice or not. Neither Schools Superintendent John Crowe or Business Administrator Dennis DeMarino were available for comment. Julie Bair, director of special services for the district, was left in charge on Friday. She said she had "no comment" about Rotella's fate. "You can call her and ask her for her comments," Bair said before hanging up. Rotella, …

Oh I believe they are paid better then Walmart workers. I also believe the Walmart workers probably only get 2 short breaks a day, with an unpaid lunch and they also put in a whole 8 hours. They don't work for 6 1/2 hours, get an hour paid lunch (included in the 6 1/2 hours) plus professional periods to prepare for the next (short) day. Plus alot of days off, the whole summer off, great benefits…   more ›
