With new walkways, pedestrians will have a happier time in the Woodbridge park, one of Middlesex County's oldest.
Iselin residents have been noticing a lot of activity around Merrill Park, and they were wondering what was going on. Turns out the Middlesex County Board of Freeholders is engaging on a series of park improvments they say will improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety in what is one of the county's oldest and most heavily used parks. The county park is located in the Iselin section of Woodbridge Township. The changes, expected to be completed by this summer, include separate, 10-foot wide paved walking paths for pedestrians, who now share a roadway with vehicles. The project also includes the addition of something known as a "traffic calming device." Fences have been erected and some trees were removed as part of the first phase of the …

Shafiq and Babar Qureshi of Iselin were allegedly the masterminds behind a sophisticated scam described as one of the largest of its kind ever seen
Federal agents Tuesday arrested more than a dozen people involved in a credit card fraud scheme described as one of the largest of its kind ever uncovered by the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman announced at a press conference in Newark. “The losses in this case are, in a word, massive,” Fishman said of the far-reaching conspiracy, which cost credit card issuers at least $200 million in losses. That estimate, however, is “conservative,” Fishman said, adding that it may in fact be much higher. The elaborate scheme required “patience and skill” to carry out, Fishman also said Tuesday. Prosecutors said Shafiq and Babar Qureshi, who reside in the Iselin section of Woodbridge, were the ringleaders, according to …

When confronted, the suspect fled, a weed whacker in hand. The victim chased Zakarevicis, who then turn on the victim, brandishing a knife. The victim went at the suspect’s arm, causing Zakarevicis to drop the knife and flee into the Cloverleaf Cemetery. Police have few leads in the early-morning attack.
A man was assaulted with a metal instrument during a fight in the parking lot of the Shalimar restaurant in Iselin early Friday morning. According to Woodbridge Police Captain Roy Hoppock, the assault, which took place at 2:38 am, began when one of the persons the victim was with in the parking lot went to one of the other cars in the lot and started a conversation with the occupants. For unknown reasons, a fight then broke out. “An unknown male retrieved a metal object and hit him over the head,” said Hoppock, noting the object was likely a tire iron or tool. The assailants then fled the scene, Hoppock said. The victim refused medical attention. The victim and witnesses at the scene “could not provide any vehicle information …

Iselin homeowners came home to a ransacked house and empty suitcases - which is where they had hidden their money and jewelry.
Burglars broke into an Iselin condo on Monday and made off with more than $8,000 in cash that was stashed in suitcases in the home. Another $1,000 hidden in a jewelry box was also taken. Woodbridge police said that the female homeowner had returned home from work on August 13 and discovered the front door of the Green Hollow Drive condo had been jimmied open. The woman, police said, lives in the condo with her husband and in-laws, who had left that morning to visit family in St. Louis. When police arrived, they found the condo had been ransacked throughout the building, and that suitcases, which had been tucked away in closets, were open and their contents strewn around the bedrooms. The woman checked the suitcases, which the family used …

A flag raising ceremony in Iselin Saturday celebrated the Indo-American communities' heritage while two neighboring parades still didn't resolve their differences.
Amid a contentious battle between the Indian Business Association and the Oak Tree Indian Business Association - the two groups divided over the right to host India Day celebrations along the Iselin/Edison border - the Indian community celebrated India's 65th year of independence with a flag hoisting ceremony Saturday afternoon, a moment of calm sandwiched between a pair of parades along Oak Tree Road. The flag raising, which was presented by the Indo-American Cultural Society and the Man Making Group, was held in between the two separate Sundays when each of the parades was to be held. The IACS chose not to support either parade, according to Pradip (Peter) Kothari, President of the Indo-American Cultural Society of Iselin. His group, he …

The weather caused organizers of the Edison parade to postpone to next week, but the march went on as planned in Iselin.
It rained on their parade, but hundreds turned out to celebrate India Day in Iselin Sunday afternoon anyway. Hundreds turned out for the annual celebration of India's independence from British rule, despite a steady downpour that delayed the start of the event. Another India Day parade in Edison - set to step off at nearly the same time and place as the Iselin parade - was postponed to next Sunday due to the weather. "I just wanted to come out and enjoy the parade," said Ishaan Jain of North Brunswick, who was walking along the parade route with an umbrella for protection from rain. "It only happens once a year." The parade, sponsored by the Indian Business Association, was at the center of a contentious dispute between the group and the…

Rides, games, and deep-fried pizza are among the many things to check out at the annual Iselin festival.
The St. Cecelia's Iselin Fair, an institution in Iselin for over 70 years, is back again this week. The fair, featuring a midway, games, food, raffles, bumper cars, inflatables, 50/50s, a DJ, and just about all of the other traditional summer fair components you can think of, kicked off Monday night and runs through Saturday. "The fair has been put on since the 1930s," said Mary Jane Kress, Pastoral Associate & Cantor for St. Cecelia's and Member-In-Charge of the fair since 2005. "The first pastor held a festival, and there's been an event for St. Celelia's ever since." The fair is held at the church and school at Wilus Way ("If you enter it into a GPS, you won't find it," explained Kress, as the street does not techincally exist anymore…
