The Diocese of Metuchen's Connections Program needs adult to volunteer one-on-one with children who need their help
The Connections Program of Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Metuchen is seeking adult volunteers to make a difference in the life of a child. The child-to adult-match program is seeking adults to provide a positive friend relationship to children and youth who have suffered a loss or who have special needs. These children, who reside in Middlesex County and Franklin Township, are in desperate need of a positive role model. Adult Volunteers are being sought to make a difference in the lives of children and youth through one-to-one activities. The Diocese of Metuchen will host a formation workshop for all liturgical leaders entitled “Masses with Children” on Tuesday, June 26 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the St. John Neumann Pastoral Center, 146 Metlars Lane. The three-hour workshop will focus on ways Catholic parishes and schools can successfully prepare children to take their rightful place in the Sunday worshipping assembly. “It is important that the liturgy be celebrated well, and to be celebrated well it must engage the entire assembly,” said Rev. The Diocese of Metuchen will host an enrichment program for Catholic seniors (ages 55 and up) on Friday, June 24 at the St. John Neumann Pastoral Center, 146 Metlars Lane, Piscataway. The annual event, entitled Celebrate Life: A Day for Seniors, will begin with a 10:30 a.m. Mass celebrated by the Most Reverend Paul G. Bootkoski, D.D. with Rev. Msgr. William Benwell, JCL, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia, serving as the homilist. After Mass, there will be a luncheon with live musical entertainment. The day will close with a brief reflection given by Rev. Ronald Bonneau CSsR. and Rev. James Gilmore CSsR., co-directors of the diocesan Office for Hispanic Ministry. The cost is $20 per person. With many connections to Middlesex County, Bishop Reiss died Sunday in Lawrenceville.
Retired Bishop John C. Reiss died Sunday at 89, the Trenton Diocese announced in a statement. Reiss, the only priest born in the Trenton Diocese to serve as its bishop, was the Diocese's eighth Bishop. Reiss was ordained a priest in May, 1947 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Trenton. His first assignment was to serve as curate in Sacred Heart Parish, Tenton, where he ministered to inmates in Trenton State Prison. He was later transferred to Holy Spirit Parish in Perth Amboy and later to St. Anthony Parish in Trenton. In 1980, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Reiss the eighth Bishop of Trenton, succeeding Bishop Ahr. The Diocese is celebrating its anniversary this month.
It's been 30 years, and it seems like yesterday. The Diocese of Metuchen is celebrating its three decades of existance since it was separated and fashioned from the Trenton Diocese in 1981 and blessed by Pope John Paul II. Bishop Gregory Bootkoski will be leading a pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Nov. 19 to celebrate the milestone. The anniversary marking event begins at noon with confession and prayers, followed by a mass at 2:30 pm with Bishop Bootkoski as the main celebrant. Health care professionals and their ministry of healing and compassion will be honored at a White Mass, an annual event held by the Diocese of Metuchen. Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski will be the celebrant at the mass, to be offered in thanksgiving for health care professionals at noon on Sunday, October 30 at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi at 32 Elm Avenue in Metuchen.
