Foreclosure filings start to slow in most of the country, but not in the Garden State
The numbers tell a grim story for the Garden Sate. The tide of foreclosure is slowly receding across many of the nation’s housing markets, but it is still rising across southern New Jersey. While other regions may have higher raw numbers, housing distress was becoming pervasive across the state’s southern counties even before superstorm Sandy, according to participants in New Jersey Future’s 2013 redevelopment forum. Resolution of lawsuit, additional $80 million in funding, open way to more community placements, services.
New Jersey residents with developmental disabilities will have an easier time receiving publicly funded services at home, thanks to additional funding announced by Gov. Chris Christie in his budget address on Tuesday. Christie said that the state has settled an eight-year-old lawsuit alleging that New Jersey was violating a 1999 U.S. Supreme Court decision by having too many residents with disabilities live in institutions. Christie’s announcement of the lawsuit settlement, as well as $83 million in state and federal funding to support community placement and services, was praised by proponents of group homes and for providing services in residents’ homes. Chris Christie said the state’s future, both economically and in recovery following Hurricane Sandy, is moving in the right direction. Twenty-eight year Woodbridge Council veteran Bob Luban is seeking to run as a Republican to nab 19th District incumbent State Senator Joe Vitale's seat.
After 28 years in office, Woodbridge Fifth Ward Councilman Bob Luban announced he won't seeking reelection after his term expires at the end of this year. But Luban isn't retiring from politics. The announcement of his retirement from town council coincided with another bit of news: Luban will be seeking to run on the Republican ticket for the 19th District State Senate seat. "With all my years in government, I know how to get things done," Luban said. "I'm going to do the same thorough job for the people of the 19th District as I've done for my constituents in Colonia." The giant etailer may be making a play for an Avenel warehouse, according to a NJBIZ report.
Is Amazon looking to move into Woodbridge? The giant online etailer is rumored to be looking into a warehouse in the Avenel section of Woodbridge, according to a report on NJBIZ.com. KTR Capital Partners announced in January that they were building a $200 million Amazon warehouse in Robbinsville Township, with the facility to open sometime in 2014. The same corporation is said by a source speaking to NJBIZ to have a contract to purchase the old C&S Wholesale Grocers building, located on Blair Road in the Avenel section of the township. Rafano is one of two Middlesex County men who have been picked by Gov. Chris Christie for NJ Superior Court slots.
Woodbridge may be losing a prosecutor, but Middlesex County may be gaining a Superior Court judge. Christopher D. Rafano, who serves in the Woodbridge Municipal Court as a prosecutor and in Middlesex County as the freeholder director, has been nominated by Gov. Chris Christie on Monday to the New Jersey Superior Court, according to a press release from the governor's office. Rafano, a Democrat who has law offices in South River, also holds a prosecutor position in Jamesburg. He's been on the Board of Freeholders since 1998. New Jersey will adopt the Federal Emergency Management's (FEMA) Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps, clearing the way for residents and business owners along the Jersey Shore to rebuild better and stronger, Gov. Chris Christie announced during a press conference in Seaside Heights Thursday afternoon. The move comes as residents along the shore wait to find out not if they'll have to raise their homes following Hurricane Sandy, but just how high. Once again, the Republican governor picks Democratic Woodbridge to hold his campaign events.
Once again, Woodbridge is going to be the spotlight for Gov. Chris Christie. The Republican governor is going to hold his campaign kickoff fundraiser in Woodbridge next month.
