A special meeting is being held tonight at Avenel Middle School by the Board of Education
The Monday after the state released its budget aid figures for school districts, the Woodbridge Board of Education will be holding a special meeting to adopt its tentative budget for the 2013-2014 school year. Woodbridge received a modest increase in aid of $71,504 from Trenton, bringing the total from $23,285,384 for the 2012-2013 school year to $23,356,888 for this year's budget. The township fared better than comparable municipalities such as neighboring Edison, which had no increase in its state aid budget. No district had its aid slashed, as had been it the case in some towns in recent years. The special meeting will be held at 7 pm at Avenel Middle School, the Board posted on their webpage. Angela Korodan, a retired assistant superintendent, will be the temporary head of the district until a permanent replacement is found.
With the impending reassignment of John Crowe to an elementary school principal's position on December 1, that leaves an empty space at the top of the Woodbridge School District while the board engages in its superintendent search. The Board announced last week that they will be bringing a former assistant school superintendent, Angela Korodan, out of retirement to fill Crowe's superintendent spot until a permanent replacement can be found. "She'll be the interim superintendent," said Board attorney Jonathan Busch. "She was a pleasure to work with, a true professional." Korodan had once served as the district's temporary superintendent, when Crowe's predecessor, Vincent S. Smith, had left, and before Crowe was took on the superintendent …

A newcomer and incumbent on one team win handily, while another BOE member retained her seat in Tuesday's election.
The only election in Woodbridge Tuesday night was for three seats on the Board of Education, and although it wasn't a municipal election, it proved the strength of Mayor John McCormac in Woodbridge. That's because McCormac's BOE team - Daniel Harris, a legislative aide to Woodbridge Council attorney Craig Coughlin, and Board of Education incumbent Ezio Tamburello - were the top vote-getters in the election. Harris won big with 9,568 votes, followed by Tamburello with 7,520. The third seat was retained by BOE incumbent Judith Leidner, who grabbed 6,550 votes. Leidner ran with fellow BOE member Lawrence Miloscia, who came in fourth in the voting. Only 58 votes separated the team mates. Another big surprise was retired Woodbridge teacher …

Not many people attended the Woodbridge Board of Education debate that was lightly publicized.
The biggest thing about Monday's Board of Education debate was how few people showed up for it. In a year that has seen the school district ripped apart with resignations, suspensions, and an omnipresent cheating scandal, the debate hosted by the Presidents' Council of Woodbridge Township had almost as few fireworks as it had audience members. Three incumbents - Judy Leidner, Lawrence Miloscia, and Board Vice President Ezio Tamburello - are running for the three open seats, as are two newcomers, former district physical education teacher Peter Capitano, Sr. and political aide Daniel Harris. The selection of a new school superintendent was as hot of an issue as it got. Woodbridge School Superintendent John Crowe will be leaving his post …

The Woodbridge Board of Ed meeting is tonight at Avenel Middle School.
The search is on for a superintendent in the Woodbridge School District, and setting a date for a town-hall style forum will be on the agenda at tonight's Board of Education meeting. The BOE will be holding their regular meeting tonight at 7 pm at Avenel Middle School. They will discuss when they will hold an open meeting for the public where the details of the superintendent search committee will be reviewed. Current School Superintendent John Crowe will be leaving his job on December 1, the latest result in the school cheating scandal that has run rampant through the school district. Several teachers and principals have been suspended because of the standardized test cheating row which still isn't over. The NJ Department of Education …

The Democratic-backed slate of candidates is running, along with the man who was supposed to be running with them, and two incumbents.
Many towns have a host of candidates running for office. But in Woodbridge, where there are no municipal elections this year, the big event locally is Board of Education candidates. Three incumbents are running for reelection on the nine-member board, and two challengers will be joining them tonight. All five are due at a debate October 15, sponsored by the Presidents' Council of Woodbridge Township. The debate will be held at 7 pm at Avenel Middle School tonight. Fords Middle School principal Glenn Lottman will serve as moderator. The incumbent BOE members running to hold onto their seats are Judy Leidner, Lawrence Miloscia, and Board Vice President Ezio Tamburello. The two new candidates who hope to secure a BOE seat are Daniel Harris …

Woodbridge has stopped selling its solar panel energy credits because the price is less than 10 percent of what it was at its height. That could mean taxpayers will be on the hook.
The market upon which municipalities were selling solar credits generated by the frenetic installation of solar panels in the past few years is now trading for less than 10 percent of what it was at its height. That means that the boom times of borrowing money for solar panels, and envisioning that the sale of Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs) generated by the panels was going to pay for it all, is over. The problem for taxpayers in towns like Woodbridge, where both the municipal government and to a larger extent, the Board of Education, borrowed deeply for solar panel generation projects means that residents will be stuck with the bill. Michael Flett is the proprietor of the Flett Exchange, the stock market of SREC sales. He …

On one hand, it's easier to have consolidated voting in Woodbridge. But on the other hand, if you like voting down that school board budget...
Take advantage of legislation approved by the state legislature and pushed by Gov. Chris Christie, the Woodbridge Board of Education voted to move the school board elections from April to November. The nine-member board unanimously approved the date change. The upside of moving the school board election date to November is to take advantage of the heavier voter turnout. April elections have always been relatively sparsely attended compared to November general elections. There would also be taxpayer savings generated by having one ballot printing in November, versus two with an April election. There are concessions, though, for moving the date of the school board elections. One is the loss of the ability to vote on the school board budget…

Board of Education member Steve Rogan from the Keansburg School District has been disqualified from his BOE seat because of a failure to pass the criminal background check.
The NJ Department of Education still hasn't released the names of the more than 350 school board and charter school trustees who failed to fill out a form allowing a criminal background check. "We are still finalizing the list," said Allison Kobus, spokesman for the department late Wednesday. But she did release the name of a school board member who underwent a criminal background check and failed it: Steve Rogan, who sat on the Keansburg Board. Under state law, Rogan is now disqualified to keep his board of education sit because he has something in his past that came up during the criminal background search. Rogan could not be reached for comment. Kobus said that the reason for the disqualification is not given out according to the …
The names of the 350+ Board of Education and Charter School officials who will be kicked out of office for not filling out a criminal background check form are due to be released today. Meanwhile, Woodbridge BOE members have passed the check.
Today's the day that the names of the 362 school board members and charter school trustees who haven't filled out a mandatory criminal background check form with the NJ Dept. of Education is due to be released. Parents in Woodbridge, though, can rest assured that all nine members of the Woodbridge Board of Education have filled out that form, and none have criminal records, said School Superintendent Dr. John Crowe. "All our board members took part in that process," Crowe said. "We've received notification that they all passed it." Board President Brian Small said he'd be "very surprised" if any of his fellow board members hadn't complied with the Dept. of Education mandate. Speaking about board members statewide, Small said, "We've had …
