Star Wars Comes to Woodbridge Community Center

Kids of all ages are invited to attend the Sunday event and dress as their favorite Star Wars character

You are never too old to adore 'Star Wars' - and if you're a fan, Sunday's your day. Woodbridge Township is planning a 'Star Wars Spectacular', to be held Sunday from 3 pm to 6 pm at the Woodbridge Community Center. It's all part of the new township promotion, the Woodbridge Family Series, designed to help sell the community center and boost its economic fortunes. The gym at the center will be "transformed into a galaxy far, far away" as the program features favorite Star Wars characters. Both children and adults will enjoy games, tattoos, cookie decorating, light saber demonstrations and free pictures, courtesy of Walgreens, of fans with their Star Wars favorites. There will also be video games, toys, and Star Wars memorabilia for sale. …

A Year After a Freak Fall Claimed a Life, "Moves Like Woodbridge" is Repackaged

Jean Donato died in a bizarre accident a year ago during the township-promoted exercise event. A year later, her death is still ignored by officials- but the shakefest has been renamed and toned down.

A year after a freakish accident claimed the life of a longtime Woodbridge Board of Education employee, the township-sponsored exercise event that cost the woman her life has quietly disappeared. Instead, it's been revamped into a presumably safer 12-week dieting and exercise event, called the "Mayor's Spring into Shape Weight Loss Challenge." Residents who pay a $30 fee will get a t-shirt with Mayor John McCormac's fat fighting slogan, "Shape Up Woodbridge!" on it. They'll also receive a pedometer, nutrition education classes, and workout sessions at the Woodbridge Community Center.  Big losers will win cash prizes, said McCormac in a statement on the event. In 2012, the exercise event was known as "Moves Like Woodbridge." The idea was …

Almost $40K Later...What Did Woodbridge Get for Marketing the Community Center?

Can a PR firm generate enough publicity to make the community center and golf course pay off?

When the Woodbridge Council allotted almost $40,000 to a PR firm to market the Woodbridge Community Center in 2012, what were they getting for their money? So far, there's been a new logo and a new program name, the Woodbridge Family Series, a compilation of events that have been held in the township throughout the years. The Have-A-Heart Food Drive, the Easter Egg Hunt, even auditions for Woodbridge Idol, have all been regrouped into the Family Series. The YMCA, the Arenas ice skating rink, and the Skyline Mini-Golf course all come under the heading of money-making ventures that Mayor John McCormac is hoping will produce the revenue he's looking for. McCormac endorsed the hiring of 20 Lemons, the PR firm that is hawking the Community …

Woodbridge Spends More than $30K to Market Community Center

All together, the town has spent $37,800 this year on hiring a marketing company to hype the community center.

For the second time in a year, the township council approved funding to hire a local marketing firm to promote the Woodbridge Community Center. 20 Lemons, a Woodbridge-based marketing company, will receive $30,000 to implement a marketing plan to bolster the fortunes of the community center. The resolution was approved at the August 7 council meeting. In January, the council had voted on an agreement for a marketing plan with 20 Lemons, whose website motto is "Think it, build it, squeeze it." The cost of the January agreement was $7,800. The promotion includes the community center itself as well as the new miniature golf course, built on the rear of the capped landfill site upon which the community center rests. The 18-hole golf course, …

Tom, you really expect accountability out of these types? Why would they drop that amount of money on a no-bid contract (great transparency!) for a golf course? Wouldn't that be part of the business plan before going forward with the project? It's called marketing costs. In Woodbridge, it's called padding the pockets of your cronies.   more ›
