Work has begun on the $500K skateboard park, located right next door to St. John Vianney Church

Less than two weeks after the town council gave approval to a contractor, there were signs in Colonia that work had already begun on the township's new skateboard park. The park, the second of its kind in Woodbridge, marked almost $1 million spent in "a new phase of entertainment opportunities", Mayor John McCormac has said, that have opened in the township in less than a month. The recently completed Skyline Miniature Golf Course, located behind the Woodbridge Community Center, opened in April to fanfare with its outdoor water features, bridge, and 18 holes of play. The Colonia skateboard facility, budgeted at $500K, is situated on a small field right next to St. John Vianney Church off Inman Avenue.  The ground is marked off, the dirt …

The Woodbridge native, injured in a Rutgers football accident, signed up with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Eric LeGrand, the Woodbridge native and Rutgers football player seriously injured in a football game, will now be a free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, nj.com has reported. LeGrand's coach at Rutgers, Greg Schiano made the announcement today. The details of how LeGrand would be involved with the team will be released later today. “Leading up to the draft, I couldn’t help but think that this should’ve been Eric’s draft class,” Schiano said in a statement released today by Rutgers and the Buccaneers. “This small gesture is the least we could do to recognize his character, spirit, and perseverance. County Residents Can Play at the Colonia Country Club - For a Fee

There's a lot of confusion surrounding who can play and when at the Colonia Country Club since the township bought the land development rights last year.

When Woodbridge Township purchased the land rights to the Colonia Country Club last year, the preservation of open space was one of the benefits Mayor John McCormac touted. Another major draw was that Woodbridge residents who weren't club members would now be able to play on the golf course.  According to Bill Kelly, the club manager, it's not quite that simple. "There is so much misinformation floating around out there," Kelly said. "There is no such thing as open or public play for Woodbridge residents. It doesn't exist. "Everyone was led to believe that. It's not the truth." Colonia is still a private club, Kelly said.  When the land development rights to the club were purchased by the township last year for $6.2 million, Middlesex …

POLL: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

A NY Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for…

I have coached multiple years of baseball and softball and these prices are off base. A decent youth glove runs about $35 (Louisville Slugger, Mizuno) and you can find serviceable gloves for around $25 (Wilson). IMO the best youth gloves are in the $60-$70 range (Rawlings, Slugger, Mizuno, Wilson) and should last multiple seasons. Youth Cleats are $20 to $35 for (Nike, Mizuno, NB, Under Armour). …   more ›

Council President Gregg Ficarra, along with other council members and township employees, were on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Enjoy the View! A Preview of the Woodbridge 'Skyline' Mini-Golf Course

The new mini golf course at the Woodbridge Community Center opens Monday. Here's a preview - with the New York skyline for which it is named.

That's when Woodbridge's new 18-hole miniature golf course - Skyline Mini-Golf, named after a view of the New York skyline - opens next to the Woodbridge Community Center. The ribbon cutting is set for 12 noon.  Signs around the golf course, which boasts water amenities and themed holes, showed it was still getting ready for the grand opening. Mayor John McCormac said in a letter to township residents that the mini-golf course was just the beginning: "In coming months, we anticipate even more recreation activities with the addition of professional baseball/softball batting cages, a trampoline center, family picnic area, and companion recreational and entertainment amenities." "Imagine a senior resident …

Near Woodbridge Resident, Perhaps. Ms. Winfrey’s comment about the cemetery was meant to be a metaphor about how this mayor and his administration are burying the residents of this community and their children in debt. But that is something she can comment on, should she choose to do so. Few would argue that seeing children, seniors or adults enjoying a wholesome game, is not a pleasant sight. It…   more ›

New Woodbridge Miniature Golf Course Set to Open April 9

Officials say the $428,000 mini-golf course features themed holes, water amenities, and a view of the Manhattan skyline.

A miniature golf course, set on a capped landfill next to the township's community center, is slated to open April 9. Dubbed "Skyline Mini-Golf," the 18-hole course set on 1.5 acres of land that used to be the town dump is part of the township's "new phase of entertainment opportunities" promised by Mayor John McCormac last year when the funding for the project was approved. The golf course will join other township-bonded entertainment facilities, such as a new $500,000 skateboard park Township officials said the golf course is family friendly and includes water features, themed hole designs, and a view of the Manhattan skyline, which accounts for the course's name. The township is pitching the mini-golf course for rent to groups and …
