Georgian Court to go Co-Ed in 2013

Male students to live on campus and compete in athletics

Georgian Court University announced a change on Tuesday that will dramatically change the face of the Lakewood school in the fall of 2013. The school will go co-ed after having served as a school for women since it opened more than 100 years ago. The school, which had only allowed men to take classes at night, will allow them to reside on campus as well as take part in the school's athletic program.  The decision, according to a school news release, followed "a strategic planning process that began in the summer of 2011."  Tara Strickland, the school's assistant editorial director, said having men on the campus will not be new as they have been allowed to attend graduate classes since 1976 and regular classes since 1979. But fall 2013 will…

POLL: Should Public School Districts Pay for Private School Busing?

The state requires public school districts to pay the transportation costs for students attending private and parochial schools.

New Jersey public school districts have been paying to bus parochial and private school students for years. A report in The Asbury Park Press puts the annual cost at $77 million a year for about 90,000 students of religious and other private schools, money that comes out of local budgets funded by property taxpayers. According to the Press, districts are required "to spend up to $884 on transportation for each student attending a private school, be it on a school bus or a parent driving the child to class." The state is one of only a handful that pay for private-school busing, with 34 banning all public funding for private schooling. We want to know what you think. Respond to our poll and offer your thoughts in the comment section below.

POLL: Are Student Secrets a Proper Test Question?

Marlboro recently completed its NJ ASK testing, and some parents weren't happy with the questions on the test.

The NJ ASK standardized testing is designed to test the general knowledge of state kindergarten through eighth grade students, but this year it also tested their ability to keep a secret. According to the Asbury Park Press, students in New Jersey reported to their parents that they were asked to reveal a secret in an essay portion of the test, and reveal why the secret was hard to keep. New Jersey Department of Education Spokesman Justin Barra confirmed with the Asbury Park Press that the "secret" question was on the test, but was not a part of the students' scores. But some parents, including Richard Goldberg of Marlboro, said he thinks the question was inappropriate. According to Barra, that question appeared in 15 districts as a "field …

Christie Talks Tenure Reform at Town Hall Meeting

Governor Chris Christie focused on education and took on teachers unions during a visit to Freehold Tuesday.

With only 54 days left until the New Jersey state budget is passed, Gov. Chris Christie suggested education reform as a way to decrease taxes, in a town hall meeting in Freehold. Hundreds of New Jersey residents gathered at the Freehold National Guard Armory for a town hall meeting where Christie discussed his plan to decrease the state’s budget. According to Christie, New Jersey spent $25 billion supporting public schools during the 2009-2010 school year, an average of $17,836 per student. “That is the most of any state in America, per pupil,” Christie said. “I am a product of public education, but I support good public education. I support public education that makes our children's futures bigger and brighter and stronger, and I will no…

I'm tired of our governor and others dumping on teachers.I've been a counselor for 25 years in a school and it's getting impossible to motivate students and parents. The problems exist with their home life and not with teachers. This is why I'm getting out ! I'm not sure who will want to go into teaching anymore !   more ›

Who's Your Favorite Woodbridge Teacher?

Help us celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week on Woodbridge Patch.

“Every day I am asked what the secret is to ensuring every child in New Jersey graduates from high school ready for college and career, and I always have one simple response – outstanding teachers.” Those are the words of NJ Acting Commissioner of Education Christopher Cerf in a video address made available Monday on the state's website. “I began my career as a high school history teacher, and I can honestly say that I never worked harder or felt more rewarded than I did during those four years. We as a state should make sure that we celebrate outstanding educators every day for their work with our children and for developing the next generation of leaders," he said. Vandals Strike JFK High School Stadium, Field House

But thanks to the quick work of the janitorial staff, the damage was quickly minimized.

When the students and staff showed up for school at John F. Kennedy High School in Iselin Tuesday morning, they had an unpleasant surprise waiting for them. Somewhere between Monday evening, April 30, and the opening of school at 8 am on May 1, vandals had struck the school's stadium, field house, and concession stand, and wreaked havoc. Police said they met with JFK Athletic Director Paul Postorino to survey the damage at the school. Vandals had pried open the door to the men's bathroom in the fieldhouse, plugged up the sinks with paper towels, turned on the faucets, and flooded the bathroom. A stainless steel water fountain was pried off the outside of the field house, placed in the middle of the football field, with the word "LOL" - …
