Obituary: Irene Meklune, 95, of Carteret

Visitation is today, June 18, at Chubenko Funeral Home in Port Reading.

Irene Meklune, 95, of Carteret passed away June 14 at JFK Medical Center in Edison.  Born in Woodbridge, Irene was a lifelong resident of Carteret. She with her husband Henry were the owner-operators of Mac’s Auto Body Shop in Carteret. After her husband Henry’s passing in 1983, she managed the business with her son, Henry. Irene was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Carteret, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mt. Zion Chapter #116, a member of the Hill Seniors and the Carteret Day Seniors Group. She is preceded in death by her parents Paul and Elizabeth Palko, her husband Henry R. Meklune in 1983, 2 brothers Joseph and Roland Palko. Obituary: Joseph H. Messina, 61, Sewaren

A member of the Hog Motorcycle Club of Rahway, Messina died in a motorcycle accident on Memorial Day.

Joseph H. Messina, 61, of Sewaren died on Monday, May 28. Born in Perth Amboy, he had resided in Iselin and Carteret before moving to Sewaren 15 years ago. He had been an auto mechanic at Mauro Motors in Woodbridge. Joe was a member of The Hog Motorcycle Club of Rahway and enjoyed fishing and cooking. Joseph is predeceased by his parents Charles and Sonia Messina. He is survived by his daughter. The Woodbridge resident was a secretary at the Star-Ledger.

Woodbridge resident Elsie T. Hasselbrink died on Friday, May 25, at her home. She was 83 years old.  Born in Elizabeth, she resided there before moving to Woodbridge in 1955.  Mrs. Hasselbrink had worked as a secretary with the Newark Star Ledger many years ago. She was a communicant of Saint James Catholic Church in Woodbridge.  Mrs. Hasselbrink was predeceased by her husband, Edward A. The Colonia resident passed away May 19 in Scotch Plains.

Joseph Hrycyszyn passed away Saturday, May 19, at Ashbrook Care and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains. He was 81 years old. Born in Tremgowla, Poland, he resided in Elizabeth before moving to the Colonia section of Woodbridge 36 years ago. He was employed as an assembler with General Motors Corporation in Linden for over 25 years before retiring in 1995; and was previously employed by Schrafft’s in New York City. Mr. Hrycyszyn was a communicant of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Colonia; and was a United States Army veteran. Richard J. De Ieso, Jr. died on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was 81 years old. Born in Union, he resided in Woodbridge for many years before moving to Clearbrook Village in Monroe Township 13 years ago. De Ieso owned and operated Union Hill Road Coffee Shop in Irvington for many years before retiring in 1996. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a communicant of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Monroe, belonged to the Italian-American Club at Clearbrook Village and was a former member of B.P.O.E. Obituary: John "Joe" Brown, 71, Colonia

John “Joe” Brown died Tuesday, May 8, at his Colonia home. He was 71. Joe was born in Jersey City, and resided in Iselin and Atlantic Highlands before moving to Colonia in 1986. He was employed as a product specialist for WW Grainger Inc. in Cranford for 10 years before his retirement several years ago. Before that, Joe was an auto mechanic for Hilltop AAmco in Iselin. He was an Air Force veteran serving during the Vietnam War. Joe was head coach of the Pop Warner Iselin Giants and a member of the St Cecelia’s Knights of Columbus, Iselin. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Frances Brown, and his brother Alan Brown. Obituary: Santiago Torres, 78

The Iselin resident died May 5 at Raritan Bay Medical Center.

Santiago Torres, 78 of Iselin passed away Saturday, May 5, at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy.  Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, he lived in Iselin for many years. Retiring in 1998, he was employed by the Perth Amboy Board of Education as a custodian for ten years. He was a longtime Little League coach for the city of Perth Amboy.  He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Maria (Gutierrez) Torres; a son Frank E. Mrs. Wilk, an Avenel resident, passed away Sunday in Westfield.

  Leona E. Wilk of the Avenel section of Woodbridge passed away on Sunday, April 29, at Westfield Center in Westfield. She was 92 years old.  Born in Nanticoke, PA, she resided in Avenel since 1952.  Mrs. Wilk was employed at Conrad-Hanovia in Newark for many years before retiring in 1979.  She was a communicant of St. Andrew’s R.C. Church in Avenel, where she sang in the choir, and was a member of the Altar-Rosary Society. She was a member of The Avenel Golden Circle Senior Citizens Club.  Mrs. Wilk was predeceased by her husband Walter S. Wilk, Sr., who died in 1979, and a son, Walter S. A former Carteret and Woodbridge area resident, affectionately known as "Helen Honey," passed away in Jackson on April 20.

Helen B. Gurka Geraldi, 95, died Friday, April 20, 2012 at Bartley Healthcare in Jackson. “Helen Honey” was born in Carteret, the daughter of the late Michael Konikiewicz and his wife, Helen (nee Uhryn). Helen Honey was a graduate of Carteret High School where she was a cheerleader and a five foot tall basketball player. After graduating, she married and raised her family in Woodbridge Township. She also lived in Surf City, Waretown and Forked River before settling in Jackson in 2007. Although Helen’s mother said her daughter was born on July 3, just before the fireworks, a mid-wife recording error gave Helen Honey three birthdays, which she exploited with gusto. Loretta J. Murphy, 85, formerly of Port Reading, died Wednesday at her home in Toms River. Born in Bayonne, Loretta had lived in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township before moving here to Toms River in 1997. She was associated with Bergen Avenue Bus Company in Bayonne for many years.  She was predeceased by her husband, Brandon, in 1974. Loretta is survived by two sons, Brandon and Donald, both of North Carolina; a daughter, Geraldine R.
