Needy Seniors May Get Free Home Repairs by Applying to Township Program

Do you know of a qualifying elderly or disabled township resident who needs repairs on their home? A free local program can be a big help - apply now!

Do you know of a senior citizen who can't keep up with the maintenance on their home? If so, the Woodbridge municipal government is looking for them - to help.

It's the time of the year for "Tooling Around the Township," where volunteers and businesses pitch in to do extensive work on the residences of the elderly and disabled who can't physically or financially complete needed repairs on their homes.

This year, though, the township's Housing Authority, which handles the paperwork for the program, could use the names of some more nominees: there aren't enough people who have filled out requests to have work done on their homes.

"If you have a poverty line income, you qualify," said township spokesman John Hagerty. "It's a sort of one day Extreme Makeover for qualifying homes."

The program has been in existence for 10 years. Crews of volunteers, including union members, businessmen, and others, are sent around town to do whatever work is needed on the house of a recipient. Supplies are donated by Lowes or Home Depot, Hagerty said.

This year the one-day home repair marathon will be held on April 30.

Anyone needing home repairs who fits into the guidelines is encouraged to fill out the short application and get it in as soon as possible. Neighbors and friends can also nominate anyone they know whom they think can benefit.

Volunteers and donations of supplies and materials are also needed.
