Will Keasbey, NJ, Kiss a Good-bye to the Mayor's Gas-Fired Power Plant Project

A federal court has ruled against a proposed gas-fired power plant in Maryland.

As many may know, the mayor of Woodbridge Twp is a 'big' proponent of the construction of a publicly subsidized gas-fired power plant, which is planned for the Keasbey section of the township.

If erected, not only would that pending plant get state taxpayer subsidizes, the township would give the plant owners a local tax abatement. Forget for a moment, if you can, that tax abatement would constitute a double-dip, so to speak, into the pockets of local taxpayers.  Why?  Because it also deprives the Woodbridge School District and the local fire district (also a seperate taxing authority) of tax revenues from the power plant's tax obligation to the township.

Basically, the winners in such tax abatement deals are the plant owners,  plus local politicians that can then dole out snippets of the taxes they do collect to other township taxing authorities, like the school district.  Of course, with much fanfare!

In cases like this, I am almost glad to see big government interfering in state and local issues.  Most likely the only ones that will really profit from this ruling are the layers that will either defend or challenged it.  As long as they get paid, can lawyers on either side ever really lose?
