Who's Race 2012

Thanks to the courage of some New Jersey drivers, and the timely reporting by the Star-Ledger, the public has been made aware of a few disturbing facts about what has been dubbed by the press as Death Race 2012.

While much of the coverage is being focused on the two NJ State Troopers, one of whom is a sergeant, less is being said about the “racers” and how they were able to get two (that we know of) elite police force members to assist them in what clearly was an event that showed a total disregard for the position of trust they hold, and the safety of the public they are sworn to protect. 

Perhaps, the lure of currying favor from a sports “Hero” (funny, most heroes save lives or give theirs for others), as some in the press are calling at least one of the racers, overwhelmed the judgment of these highly trained officers.  But was it only the two troopers who helped some overindulged celebrities organize and run the illegal race?  Might other higher ups have known and condoned the race and, if so, for what reasons?  Game tickets, best seats, invites to after game parties, political contributions; one can only wonder?!

Like the disgraced, and now unemployed, members of the US Secret Service Presidential security team, these two NJ Troopers have brought shame to their distinguished organization.  Moreover, their actions reflect, unfortunately and unfairly, on the good members of their organization.   Whatever fate awaits those two troopers, they have earned it.  That said, it is hoped they are not the scapegoats in this incident.  The drivers, all of them, in the race should lose their driving privileges and be fined to the max.  Few would argue they cannot afford it!
