Five thousand children nationwide, plus caregivers, public safety officers, and school and municipal officials will be participating today in International Walk to School Day (iWalk). In Middlesex County, the event is being coordinated by Keep Middlesex Moving (KMM).
Nineteen schools in 14 municipalities in the county will be joining in, including Mawbey Street School in Woodbridge.
School children will be walking to learn about pedestrian safety and the health benefits of walking. But the event is also a fun community activity that includes "walking school bus, golden sneaker award, bicycle rodeos, and presentations to schoolchildren on walking, biking, and railroad crossing safety,” said Peter Bilton, program coordinator.
The first Walk to School Day in 1997 was organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America; this year, Middlesex County participants will be part of a global initiative in more than 40 countries from Argentina to Uganda. In the US alone, over 3000 walks are scheduled.
