JFK High School Students Win $5,000 Grant for a Fish Farm

Science students at in Iselin won a $5,000 grant to purchase a fish farm.

The students were from one of ten selected schools in Morris and Middlesex counties to benefit from a $50,000 science education grant from , which has research and development facilities in Iselin.

The grant money for JFK will be used to purchase a mini-fish farm which will allow students to raise baby tilapia, a fresh water species. Students will conduct water sampling tests and learn how to preserve wild fish populations.

The data, school officials said, will be used for students to experiment with changes in water temperature and food to see how it affects the fish population.

“Today’s students will be the thinkers, innovators and leaders of the future; therefore, we need to stimulate their interest in science early on. With these grants, we are helping students experience science in fun and creative new ways; engaging their imaginations and hopefully inspiring a new generation of scientists, physicists, engineers and mathematicians," said BASF Vice President and Communications Chief Robin Rotenberg in a statement.

The awards were given during a ceremony at the company's headquarters in Florham Park.
