Vets Looking for Work Get a Break at 'Hiring Our Heroes'

The vet-centered hiring fair will be held Friday, March 9, at the American Legion Post in Iselin.

Military personnel returning home after overseas duty face the same bleak job picture civilians already contend with. The American Legion and the NJ Chambers of Commerce are looking to change that.

On Friday, March 9, veterans and their spouses are encouraged to attend "Hiring Our Heroes," a nationwide and very local effort to help vets land meaningful employment in the automotive industry. The program, cosponsored by the American Legion and the NJ Coalition of Automotive Retailers, will be held at the at 25 Brown Avenue in Iselin from 10 am to 2 pm.

Twenty auto dealers, as well as industry related suppliers, such as , Pep Boys, , Jiffy Lube, Midas and Goodyear, will be participating. Resume experts will be on hand, and computer workstations, courtesy of Verizon, will be set up to help vets find work. Counselors will also be available from Vet2Vet, U.S. Veterans Administration and NJ Dept. of Military & Veterans Affairs.

"With veteran unemployment high and rising, this is the type of event that can bring veterans into a career field, which can match their education and skills in a variety of positions,” said Rich Liebler, one of the organizers from the Sansone Auto Group. “Many job seekers aren’t familiar with the type of jobs available in this industry. This event will address that.”
