Democrat Challengers Topple Incumbents In Barnegat

Updates on the 2012 election will be posted here throughout the day.

Democrats will now hold the majority vote on the Barnegat Township Committee following tonight's election.

Challengers Elaine Taylor and Susan Conway defeated former mayor and current township committeeman Jeffrey Melchiondo and current mayor Al Cirulli, who have been serving on the committee since 2004, who ran on the same Republican ticket.

With all districts reporting, but mail ins yet to be tallied, Conway recieved 4,852 votes, Taylor 4,776 votes, Melchiondo, 3,756, and Cirulli, 3,676.

Taylor is a former Board of Education member and stay-at-home mother and Conway, who grew up in Barnegat, works as an attorney in Northern New Jersey. Conway served on a charter commission to re-examine the form of government in town several years ago.

Interviewed by Patch this evening, Taylor said she and Conway are "ecstatic" with the results.

Conway said that she and Taylor's immediate plans involve going over the budget with a "fine tooth comb" to see if there are any areas that should be tightened up.

Cirulli thanked his supporters, and said he will spend the remainder of his term as mayor "trying to tie up loose ends."

Melchiondo echoed those comments, noting that "we've worked hard for Barnegat over these years, adn we're not going to turn away between now and Dec. 31."

Incumbent Frank Caputo was reelected to a Board of Education seat, along with Kim Murphy, of Tradewinds Avenue, and Grace Paulus, of Jenelle Drive. They recieved more votes than one of Caputo's running mates, James Brown.

Around noon today, voters at the high school reported little to no lines for voting.

Later in the day, one township official reported "all of the polling places are busy," but lines are moving quickly. "We're having a busy but quiet election."

Why they lost: Breedens 5 year contract which gave him a 6% raise, take home car, clothing allowance and sell back of unused vacation and sick time,. Use of open space funds for lower shore rd. 225K for Police Chief. 500k for Birdsall Engineering. Dasti Law firms 300K. The new majority has to get rid of Dasti, Birdsall and see if they can get Breeden to leave, although he has a 5 year contract. Morano will be Mayor and he has to see that this gets done.

Congrats Elaine and Susan on your victory. Can't wait to see those televised meetings. Concerning the benefits issue, you know, I know and everyone that reads this know that if you are not working 40 hours a week on the committee and you take benefits, you are breaking the law. That is just the way it is. So you might not speak on behalf of other people on the committee but the taxpayers need someone up there to speak on thier behalf. Someone has to step up and stop this, this is why you got overwhelmingly elected. Don't be afraid of anyone up there, just do the right thing, you will have all of Barnegat behind you. Again congrats and good luck. Just my opinion.

Now that we won the Election from them, can we please, please start getting some business in this town.A shop-rite,new place's to eat etc, etc.so we can stop building all these house's and development. So we can spend our money in our own town, and how about getting a Y.M.C.A to build that building they was talking about years ago, they wanted us to give the the land and they would build it.
