Woodbridge Cops Stop Perps from a Newark Carjacking

Five suspects were arrested in a Sewaren crash in a car allegedly stolen in a carjacking in Newark.

 

Five suspects were arrested Sunday in the Sewaren section of Woodbridge after a wild ride and chase that ended in a car crash.

tried to halt a 2001 white Chevrolet Monte Carlo on Rahway Avenue in Woodbridge for what seemed to be minor motor vehicle issues. The car, police said, looked as if it was going to pull over, but suddenly sped away, causing police to engage in a pursuit.

The car continued into Port Reading and Sewaren on State Street where it drove into oncoming traffic and crashed into a Honda Civic, police said. All five suspects in the car fled on foot, with police in pursuit.

All five were found and detained within minutes, police said. The car, they discovered, had been stolen earlier in Newark during a carjacking.

The driver of the Honda Civic, an 18-year-old man, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The alleged driver of the car, Rajah C. Harris, 19, of Avenel, was charged with receiving stolen property, eluding and obstructing police, assault by auto, leaving the scene of an accident, and other motor vehicle charges.

Other alleged suspects arrested were:

  • Raneisha Shidan Williams, 24, of Newark, charged with receiving stolen property, obstructing police, and the possession and distribution of a controlled dangerous substance; 
  • Tamire Frye, 19, of Matawan, charged with receiving stolen property and obstructing police; 
  • Akeem Tyre Wells, 19, of Highland Park, charged with receiving stolen property and obstructing police;
  • And an unnamed juvenile, 17, who was charged with juvenile complaints.

The four adult defendants were given $200,000 bail with no 10 percent option. The juvenile suspect was released to the custody of his parents, police said.
