VIDEO: Avenel Water Main Break Snarls Traffic

The failing of a water pipe in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Wednesday caused traffic problems and water issues for nearby residents.

A break in a water main in front of the old General Dynamics complex in Avenel yesterday caused a headache for police and commuters.

Water was gushing from the pipe in the late morning, according to a Middlesex Water Company worker at the scene. He gave no reason for the sudden geyser on Avenel Street.

Water company employees were working diligently to stop the water flow, but as the afternoon progressed, a frigid snow storm with sleet embraced the street and made a cold and wet job more difficult.

Woodbridge Police set up detour signs to get drivers around the water main break on what is a major road during rush hour traffic.

Some residents in the immediate area experienced a stoppage to their water service during the repairs.

The Middlesex Water Company worker estimated that the repair would be complete within several hours. As of 9 pm Wednesday night, though, some homeowners complained their water service still hadn't been restored.
