Port Reading Pop Warner Official Charged in Pilfering Almost $20,000

The treasurer of a youth football organization turned herself in Tuesday.

The former treasurer of a Port Reading Pop Warner football league has been charged with stealing $19,795.69 from the organization.

Janet Thomas, 45, was released on her own recognizance after she surrendered to Woodbridge Police Department on June 21, on a charge of third degree theft.

 The charge was filed following an investigation by Det. Anthony Penicaro of the Woodbridge Police Department and Investigator Lisa Collins of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities believe Thomas, who served as treasurer of the Port Reading Saints Football Association, allegedly pilfered funds in varying amounts between January 2010 and January 2011.

The investigation began after Saints officials checked the organization’s books and found financial discrepancies. They then contacted police.
