Middlesex Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey said the man attacked an officer with the knife prior to the shooting.

A Perth Amboy man was shot and killed during an altercation with police after he attacked a police officer with a knife on Wednesday, Acting Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced.

Dixon Rodriguez, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:50 p.m., Carey said. Perth Amboy Police were dispatched to Hall Avenue at 1:18 Wednesday afternoon.

The statement issued by the Prosecutor’s Office didn’t provide a reason for the officers being dispatched to the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, but preliminary indications are that Rodriguez was speaking to the two currently unidentified officers when he attacked one of them.

The officers were taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy Division. No results of their examinations were immediately available, but they don’t appear to be seriously injured, according to Carey.

The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Adrian Villegas of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3300.
