Iselin Man Arrested After Attempting to Steal a Weed Whacker

An officer was injured while attempting to arrest the suspect.

An Iselin man was caught digging through a neighbor’s shed Sunday night before taking off with a weed whacker.

The burglary-turned-robbery occurred around 9 PM Sunday night at a home on South McKinley Ave. in Iselin.  The victim of the crime found Steven W. Zakarevicis of Iselin in the shed of his residence.  When confronted, the suspect fled, a weed whacker in hand.

The victim chased Zakarevicis, who then turn on the victim, brandishing a knife.  The victim went at the suspect’s arm, causing Zakarevicis to drop the knife and flee into the Cloverleaf Cemetery.

Officers responding to the call searched the area and found Zakarevicis in the backyard of another South McKinley Ave. home.  Zakarevicis fled once again and was subsequently apprehended, with an arresting officer sustained a fractured hand in the process.

Zakarevicis is charged with a litany of crimes, including resisting arrest, burglary, theft by unlawful taking or disposition, possession of a weapon, robbery, and making terroristic threats.  He is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center in North Brunswick on $75,000 bail, with no 10% option.
