Former Avenel Officer Convicted on Drug Smuggling Charges

Bobby Singletary of Paterson faces a potential sentence of 5-10 years in state prison.

A former corrections officerhas been convicted of smuggling drugs into the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel, a prison for sex offenders.

According to a report on mycentraljersey.com, Bobby Singletary, 55, of Paterson was found guilty of conspiring to smuggle heroin and marijuana into the prison between August 2007 and October 2010.

Prisoners paid for the drugs by wiring money to "co-conspirators" outside of the facility, according to the report.

Singletary was indicted on Jan. 3 and convicted on conspiracy, bribery and money laundering, charges, according to the report.

Six other people were also charged, including inmate Sharod Hardgrove, 37, who was acquitted on all charges, according to the report. The other five defendants pleaded guilty.Β

Singletary will be sentenced on Nov. 8 and faces 5-10 years in state prison. He would not be eligible for parole for five years, according to the report.
