More than four inches of rain has plunged much of Mercer and Middlesex counties underwater Thursday as the region tries to recover from two days of flooding.

Parts of Routes 18 and 1 were closed and reopened as thousands were caught in traffic jams heading to work and school.

More rain could come Thursday as Accu-Weather said there was a 50 percent chance of rain.

NEW BRUNSWICK: Parts of the Raritan River overflowed as traffic on Route 18 was nearly at a standstill.

EAST BRUNSWICK: Old Matawan Road (off of Main St) is closed due to roadway flooding.

CRANFORD: On Thursday, expect traffic delays from localized street flooding. Please be mindful of standing water.

PRINCETON:The following Princeton roads have been closed because of flooding:

Alexander Road is closed from Faculty Road to the West Windsor border in Princeton due to flooding. Lawrence Drive is accessible.

Quaker Road in Princeton was closed Wednesday due to flooding.

Mercer Street was closed Wednesday due to flooding between Lovers Lane and Province Line Road.

River Road was closed Wednesday between Blue Spring Road and Herrontown Road because of flooding.

Drivers on Rte 206 south of Princeton should use caution due to standing water in the roadway.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Route 1 reopened.

All that money and time spent redoing Route 18 and they couldn't protect it from flooding?
