Elderly Driver Plows Through Amboy Ave. Convenience Store Window

The driver could've sworn the gear was in "park." He was wrong.

A 73-year-old male plowed his van through the plate glass window of an Amboy Ave. convenience store Sunday night.

The elderly man was driving a white minivan, and stopped at the Krauszer's at a small strip mall at the corner of Decker Place, said Woodbridge Police Lieut. Wayne Russo. The man said he put the vehicle in "park," but that it kept going right through the store's window.

The strip mall has a small amount of head-on parking, which the driver took advantage of before the van he thought he parked kept moving right through the window. The entire vehicle ultimately wound up inside the small store.

No one was injured in the 5:27 pm accident, including a female clerk working inside the store.

Both fire and EMS squads were called, said Lieut. Bryan DeLisi of the Woodbridge Fire Dept. "The van pushed an ice cream freezer that had been in front of the window about six feet," he said.

An eyewitness said the man appeared confused, and kept asking where his "milk was," the item he presumably stopped at the convenience store to buy. The passerby said that the van appeared to have only a small dent to show for the entire incident.

Police did not release the driver's name. Russo said the man, who lives in Woodbridge, was issued a summons for careless driving.
