Edison Man Charged in Series of Heists that Started with Iselin Card Shop

The Edison police and FBI arrested Sonny R. Augusto, 22, of Edison in a series of armed robberies that started in Iselin.

An Edison man was arrested in a whirlwind series of robberies over several towns, that apparently started with a heist at an Iselin card store in late August.

Sonny R. Augusto, 22, was picked up by Edison police at his home in that township and charged with a string of robberies spanning Woodbridge, Edison, and Hillside he allegedly committed in a little more than a week.

Edison police said that the FBI had assisted them in the Augusto case, according to a report on mycentraljersey.

The crime spree began in the Iselin section of Woodbridge on August 23, when a single gun-wielding robber held up the  store on Oak Tree Road. said that the suspect also tried to rob a customer in the store, but failed.

The robber netted $3,360 in cash from the Iselin store robbery.

Woodbridge police interviewed Augusto after he was arrested on August 30 by Edison police and the FBI and already incarcerated at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick, and determined that he was the alleged culprit in the Iselin robbery.

The gun used in the Iselin robbery apparently was a BB gun, Woodbridge police said.

Augusto was charged in several other robberies as well:

  • On August 24, a Gulf Gas Station on Inman Avenue in Edison;
  • On August 25, Augusto allegedly held up a Chinese restaurant in Hillside at gunpoint and made off with $16, according to nj.com. The same restaurant was held up again the next day, again at gunpoint, by different set of crooks.
  • On August 29, J&G Beauty Supply on Wood Avenue in Edison.

Woodbrige police said Augusto was also a suspect in several other robberies as well.

He is being held at the North Brunswick jail on $250,000 bail on various robbery and weapons charges, police said.
